Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Reading as one of the basic language skills takes important roles in students’
learning English. Students need to master reading skill because through reading students can
access knowledge and information from many sources like books, magazines, internet,
newspaper, etc. Almost all of the learning resources arein the form of printed material, so that
they need to be read first. Moreover, reading helps them practice specific language
components like vocabulary, grammar and spelling. However, the four skills indeed, cover
the basic learning competency.
In English teaching Reading skill is attached important to. So we can conclude that
reading is very vital in English Learning.
In the KTSP, the objective of learning and teaching Reading at Senior High School
is stated as follow (Depdiknas, 2009):
“ Memahami nuansa makna di dalam teks tertulis seperti teks fungsional pendek dan
esei berbentuk naratif ( narrative, recount, news item), deskriptif ( report, descriptive,
explanation), dan argumentative ( exposition, discussion) dalam konteks kehidupan sehari-
hari.”
Therefore, learning and teaching reading at senior high school is aimed at enabling
students to understand the meaning in English written texts such as functional short texts and
essays in the form of narrative, descriptive, and argumentative in daily life context.
