TUTORIAL-1

Course: Machine Design-I [337551(37)]

Theories of Failure

1. A component is subjected to an axial stress of 250 MPa and a shear stress of

150 MPa. The yield strength of the material is 400 MPa and ultimate tensile
strength is 600 MPa. Calculate the factor of safety based on distortion energy
theory. [Ans. 1.1]
2. A shaft of uniform circular section is subjected to pure torsion. Calculate the
ratio of requisite diameters according to maximum shear stress theory and
maximum principle stress theory. [Ans. 1.26]
3. A shaft is subjected to twisting moment of 1500 N-m and bending moment
of 1000 N-m. The design stress in shear is 45 MPa. Use maximum shear
stress theory and calculate
i. The equivalent torque
ii. The diameter of the shaft [Ans. 1800 N-m, 59 mm]
4. A rod having cross-section area 100x10-6 m2 is subjected to a tensile load. If
the uniaxial yield stress of the material is 200 MPa, calculate the failure load
based on Tresca failure criterion. [Ans. 20 kN]
5. A mild steel shaft of 50 mm diameter is subjected to a bending moment of
1.5 kN-m and torque T. if the yield point of steel in tension is 210 MPa, find
the maximum value of torque without causing yielding of the shaft material
according to
i. Maximum principle stress theory and
ii. Maximum shear stress theory.
6. Derive an expression for the distortion energy per unit volume for a body
subjected to uniform stress state, given by the principle stresses σ1 and σ2
with the third principle stress σ3 being zero.
