CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Today’s generation, technology plays an important role in people’s life for it
gives us positive, productive and creative activities and development. It is
somewhat helpful to some of the teenagers because it is their one way to
connect/ communicate with one another and it is also useful in terms of
searching things that we’re curious about. In this curiosity, sometimes we
reach limitations that are not good for us and it can affect our daily lifestyle
and attitude. Social media technologies nowadays is very accessible, some
of which are Facebook, Twitter, Yammer, Jive, SocialCast, YouTube, blogs, e-
mail, short messaging system (SMS) or instant messaging, chat rooms, bash
board, and social networking sites. Without guidance, it will leads us to do
such things that are unacceptable especially when we are bored like sharing
our feelings to social media. But it is not just simply sharing your thoughts or
communicating with others, there’s a lot of things that happens in social
media and one if which is cyberbullying.
Cyberbullying is one of the biggest problems today and it destroys every
individual. According to Hardcastle (2011) cyberbullying “is a form of
harassment that occurs via the Internet that may include vicious forum
posts, name calling in chat rooms, posting fake profiles on web sites, and

may escalate to a more serious act called as cyber-harassment or cyber-
stalking, a crime that can have legal consequences and involve jail time.
Chait (2006) explained that unlike the traditional form of bullying where the
bullies attack their victims face to face, perpetrators of cyber bullying have
the capability to use all types of communications technologies to attack
others deliberately and repetitively. A study by Ipos for Reuters News (2012)

The Internet. One of the victims of cyberbullying are the Generation Z or also
called as Gen Z.
Generation Z are those who were born between 1996 and 2010 (Beall 2017).
According to Ari Patel one of the National Online Journalist of Smart living
Global News, Generation Z have been described as the generation that
doesn’t go out, doesn’t socialize and spends most of their time glued to their
smartphones. For the most part, generation Z is undefined, a cluster of
tweens, teens and young adults raised in the generation of the internet.
Every individual has its own character and perceptions when it comes to
cyberbullying. It depends on how the person will handle that kind of
situation. According to Psychologists, some attitudes is a learned tendency to
evaluate things in a certain way but evaluations are not often positive or
negative, but they can also be uncertain at times. Attitudes form if you have
experienced it, influenced by others and learn to develop.
Most of the teens nowadays especially the Generation Z are abusing the
social media. Social media is used to inform and communicate other people.
But some teens used social media to bully and destroy others. Cyberbullying
is different from the traditional bullying that facing to one another. Some
teens can’t handle the humiliation and it will lead to suicide. It shows that we
should be more careful in using social media technologies.
This study aims to have an overview about the most alarming social issue
right now which is cyberbullying. The researchers decided to conduct a
quantitative research about the: Attitude of Gen Z towards Cyberbullying.
This intends to know how Liceo Students or Generation Z in University of St.

usually occurs. This will also help the researchers to have wider knowledge
about this issue and for the future researchers who wish to conduct the same
or related quantitative research.

Definition of Terms
The following terms are conceptually and operationally defined:
Generation Z. Conceptually, defined as the people who were born between
1996 and 2010 (Beall 2017). Operationally refers to Liceo students who were
enrolled in USLS ages 16 to 18.

channels dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing

a place where people or users can interact to each other such as Facebook,
Twitter, Instagram, email, etc.,
Cyberbullying in the Philippines according to Santos (2013), the cyber mob
and the day- to-day cyberbullying that remains under-reported. Cyber mob
means that a group of people join together to humiliate or manipulate via
the internet while the day-to-day cyberbullying is a repeated aggressive
behavior in social media that happens almost every day. Furthermore, a
study by Ipos for Reuters News (2012) revealed that 24 countries found that
nearly 80% of residents worldwide say cyber bullying is a problem that needs
dedicated attention from school and parents. Moreover, cyber bullying
statistics from the I-SAFE Foundation (2010) showed that more than 1 in 3
young people have experience cyber threats online and over 25 percent of
adolescents and teens have been bullied repeatedly through their cell
phones or the Internet.
Social media as a Platform in Cyberbullying
While social media is a great way to socialize with friends and family, it can
also be a magnet for hecklers (Naija Parker 2017).
According to Russell (2017) the uprising of social media has become one of
the biggest technological advancements. The source states that daily almost
76% of Facebook’s users use the website daily. The significance of this is that
Facebook actually have 2 billion active users and counting on its website.
This statistic as a whole pretty much gives an inference about social media’s
impact. I think that it is quite amazing that communicating with others and
having the urge to want to post things has brought a lot of us together; more
than we may have ever imagine. However, when a lot of people come
together and are all of different races, ethnicities, and even gender, there is
bound to be problems. One of those biggest problems being how we
communicate with each other.
Facebook is not the only platform that leads to cyberbullying. Moreover Naija
Parker (2017), said that study that was conducted by scientists from Ditch
the Label, an anti-bullying charity, a study to determine how social media
can cause anxiety among youth. By surveying more than 10,000 people
aged 12 to 20, they examined cyberbullying on Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter,
YouTube and Instagram. Overall, 68 percent of people had been sent a nasty
private message and 39 percent of people said they had a nasty comment
posted on their profile. But Instagram was the most
Concerning. They found that 42 percent of Instagram users had been bullied
on the platform compared to 37 percent for Facebook, 31 percent for
Snapchat, 10 percent for YouTube and 9 percent for Twitter.
Reasons or perceived factors behind Cyberbullying
Gordon (2017) discusses the reason why other people cyberbully others.
Cyberbullies are motivated by revenge. The motivation for these victims of
bullying is to retaliate for the pain they have experienced. When this
happens, these are often referred to as bully-victims. They feel justified in
their actions because they, too, have been harassed and tormented. Other
times, they will target someone whom they perceive to be weaker or more
vulnerable than them. Cyberbullies believe the victim deserves it. Bullying
often revolves around a person’s social status at school. They sometimes feel
their cyberbullying behaviors are warranted and deserved. Consequently,
they usually do not feel remorse or guilt for cyberbullying.
Cyberbullies want to alleviate boredom. They also might choose to
cyberbully because they lack attention and supervision from parents. As a
result, the Internet becomes their only source of entertainment and an outlet
for getting attention. Instead of finding a positive way to spend their time,
they entertain themselves by creating digital drama. Cyberbullies give in to
peer pressure. Sometimes, a person cyberbully is to fit in with a group of
friends or a clique. As a result, they succumb to peer pressure in order to be
accepted at school, even if it means going against their better judgment.
They are more concerned with fitting in than they are worried about the
consequences of cyberbullying. Cyberbullying can be a manifestation of
social status, they also will spread rumors and gossip and may even
ostracize others through cyberbullying.
Attitudes Psychologists define attitudes as a learned tendency to evaluate
things in a certain way. This can include evaluations of people, issues,
objects, or events. Such evaluations are often positive or negative, but they
can also be uncertain at times (Cherry, 2018). It
Harassment, threats and even smearing someone’s name by spreading lies.
Furthermore, a study revealed that 24 countries found that nearly 80% of
residents worldwide say cyber bullying is a problem that needs dedicated
attention from school and parents. A source states that almost 76% of
Facebook’s users use the website daily. The significance of this is that
Facebook actually have 2 billion active users and counting on its website.
This statistic as a whole pretty much gives an inference about social media’s
impact. However, as stated in the literature from ditch the label, wherein
they surveyed 10,000 people aged 12 to 20, they examined cyberbullying in
the different social media platforms. It shows that there are more
cyberbullying incidents in Instagram (42%) than Facebook (37%) even
though Facebook has more active users. While 10% for Youtube and 9% for
twitter.
To effectively qualm cyber bullying, it is important not only to know the
meaning of cyberbullying, but also how it presents itself and the possible
effects. Awareness is the key to preventing any occurrences and to ensure
that your children do not become victims. More importantly, it is very
important to know the perceiv
