Task 1: Analyze and reflect

Instructions: Reflect on the importance of digital literacy based on what you've read
in the case study. Answer the questions below in complete sentences.

1: Why is digital literacy important for students today?

Since the internet is now everyone's primary source of information, it is imperative that
students learn digital literacy and develop new strategies for accessing a variety of
information channels. Therefore, it is the responsibility of teachers to provide these
students with all the tools necessary to thrive and grow on digital platforms to ensure
they can succeed in their future endeavors. Additionally, students can practice it most
effectively once they commence in the classroom. Digital literacy is a vital skill for
students as it will be crucial for them to be able to communicate with people from
different backgrounds when they enter the workforce or other professional setting.
Along with coming up with new concepts and having access to information through
digital platforms, maintaining the digital identity will also be necessary. The program,
which was implemented specifically at Springfield's Lincoln Elementary School, aimed
to improve students' digital literacy and provide them with the necessary 21st-century
skills to use technology to hone their critical thinking skills, act responsibly online, and
venture the world in an appropriate way. In general, digital literacy plays a role in almost
every aspect of life, including school, the workplace, society, and performing tasks like
writing, selling, and buying online. Every person must be digitally literate in order to
evaluate things objectively and without using any kind of manipulation on digital
platforms.
2. What are two key skills you think are essential for digital literacy? Why?

The two key skills that is essential for digital literacy are Critical Thinking Skills and
being a Responsible Digital Citizenship. People who possess these abilities,
attitudes and knowledge can interact with digital content and navigate the online world
with efficiency. Maintaining digital literacy requires constant learning and modification.
With these skills, students can analyze information, evaluate various perspectives and
make well-informed decisions. This is crucial in both academic settings and real-life
situations. Critical thinking fosters the ability to approach complex problems
systematically and negative online behavior, breaking them down into manageable
parts and considering various solutions.

Task 2: Real-World Scenario Analysis

Instructions: Consider the following scenario and answer the questions that follow.
Use your critical thinking skills to analyze the situation and provide thoughtful
responses.

Scenario:
During a group project, one of your classmates shares a link to a website for
research. The website looks visually professional but lacks an author and source
citations. It also presents strong opinions without supporting evidence.

1. What steps would you take to evaluate the credibility of this website?

Assessing the credibility of a website is perhaps similar to inspecting a restaurant before

making a reservation. It is important to ensure that the cuisine is delicious, the
restaurant is clean and the chef is skilled. As part of the member of the group, it is
important for me to examine the website before we proceed to our final output as our
security online is our top priority. The first step that I will do is to assess the information's
quality. Is it well-written and comprehensive? Does it offer citations or sources?
Credible websites typically include links to other credible sources and support their
statements with facts. Second, check the information's quality. Is it detailed? Does it
have references or sources? Facts support the statements made on trustworthy
websites, and they frequently include hyperlinks to other reliable sites. Third, confirm
that the information is accurate. Verify for the most recent update or publication dates.
Recent updates are essential, particularly for subjects like technology and health that
change swiftly. Fourth, look for comments, evaluations, or the web references from
other reliable sources. Observe any cautions or unfavorable comments left by users or
professionals. Finally, apply Fact-Checking Tools to confirm that the information
provided on the website is reliable, use sites that verify facts or browser plug-ins. Fact-
checkers can assist in locating false information or statements that are misleading. By
using these methods, we as a group, can more accurately determine the credibility and
reliability of websites for our research.

2. How would you approach your classmate to discuss whether this site is
suitable for the project?
It is like confronting them in a nice and possible way. Be truthful, be kind and be
considerate but say what you have to say and explain the concerns without hurting
his/her feelings. Also, I will approach the conversation with a calm and composed
demeanor, with a positive tone, emphasizing the desire to maintain a healthy and
respectful relationship. I will provide the steps in evaluating the credibility of a website,
this helps not just the person who shared the link but the whole group itself understand
my perspective better I'll say that I'm open to making adjustments or finding a middle
ground, and that I'm eager to collaborate with you to find a solution that benefits us
both.

Task 3: Digital Etiquette and Online Safety Poster

Instructions: Create a digital poster that promotes digital etiquette and online safety.
Your poster should be visually appealing, informative, and include practical tips for

Task 4: Discussion and Reflection

Instructions: Imagine you are leading a class discussion on the topic of cyberbullying
and online safety. Answer the following questions based on your understanding of the
case study.

Reflection Questions:

1. How would you explain the importance of cyberbullying awareness to

younger students?

To explain the importance of cyberbullying awareness to younger students, as their

teacher discussing the issue on topic “cyberbullying” I will explain to them first what is
meant by cyberbullying and its effects to the victim being bullied. I will provide them the
most effective way to prevent cyberbullying. Start with an introduction that
Cyberbullying is a serious problem that may have long-term consequences for an
individual's emotional well-being. As a young responsible citizen having an access with
the internet, students have a role to play in preventing cyberbullying. Being mindful of
cyberbullying is the first step towards prevention. They must read, pay attention and
use the internet wisely. Because it often goes ignored, cyberbullying is more prevalent.
It is crucial to speak out against it and raising awareness is one way of accomplishing
such. Through discussion in the classroom about the topic of cyberbullying, increases
awareness and improves monitoring and work hand in hand with providing support to
the victims, calling out individuals who engage in online bullying may have a significant
impact. Another strategy to stop it is to not like and share such information. Report any
images, comments, or sites that could be seen as cyberbullying, communicate
deliberately and with cautious word choice and don't refer to or label someone with just
one word. Be consideration for other people. Try to make the places you are linked to
on the internet safer and healthier by having constructive dialogues and discussions.
More so, always think before you click to avoid falling victim to phishing attacks and
other cyber threats.

2. Suggest one-way schools could support students who experience

cyberbullying?

Preventing cyberbullying requires a comprehensive and collaborative approach

involving students, teachers, parents and the broader community. One effective way
schools could support students who experienced cyberbullying is to implement “Peer-
Teacher support Programs” by developing a mentorship or peer support programs
where teachers or older students’ mentor younger ones, fostering a positive and
supportive peer environment, training students to intervene and support their peers in
situations of cyberbullying and to create an environment where students feel
comfortable reporting incidents of bullying without fear of retaliation. Creating a secure
and encouraging learning environment is essential and it requires a sensitive response
to the problem of bullying. Proactive approaches and open communication are
necessary to address bullying without imposing punishments and to foster a positive
and compassionate atmosphere in schools.
Task 5: Digital Literacy Self-Assessment

Instructions: Reflect on your own digital literacy skills. Think about what you have
learned and consider areas for growth. Write a short paragraph in response to each
question.

1. What digital literacy skills do you feel confident about? Why?

The top 3 skills I feel confident about are; I can evaluate and create using all forms of
digital technologies, I am a responsible online or internet user and I practice online
safety. I am confident with these skills as I used and understand digital technology,
devices and applications ever since I was in my elementary years and I was also able
to effectively communicate and safe navigate the digital world by following the rules of
correct and polite behavior using the internet.

2. What areas of digital literacy would you like to improve? How do you plan to
do so?

To improve on my digital critical thinking and evaluation. By honing my digital literacy

and critical thinking skills on online platforms, I can better discern reliable sources from
fraudulent ones. Taking part in interactive seminars and using materials that educate
critical assessment techniques will improve my ability to critically evaluate information.
Participating in community discussions and media literacy program sessions can help
me develop my critical thinking and awareness even further.
