Chapter 2:

1. A pendulum consists of a 4.0 kg stone swinging on a 4.0 m string of negligible mass. The
stone has a speed of 5.0 m/s when it passes its lowest point. What is the greatest angle
with the vertical that the string will reach during the stone’s motion?
2. A block of mass m1 = 2 kg on a frictionless plane inclined at angle 30.0° is connected by
a cord over a massless, frictionless pulley to a second block of mass m2 = 3 kg. What are
the magnitude of the acceleration of each block, and the tension in the cord?
3. A block of mass m = 100 kg is pushed at constant speed up a frictionless ramp (θ = 20.0°)
by a horizontal force F. What are the magnitudes of the horizontal force F and the force Q
on the block from the ramp?
4. A boy is initially seated on the top of a hemispherical ice mound of radius R = 12 m. He
begins to slide down the ice, with a negligible initial speed. Approximate the ice as being
frictionless. At what height does the boy lose contact with the ice?
5. A pendulum consists of a 4.0 kg stone swinging on a 4.0 m string of negligible mass. The
stone has a speed of 5.0 m/s when it passes its lowest point. What is the tension in the
string at the lowest point?
6. A 2.0-kg block is initially at rest on a horizontal surface. A horizontal force F1 = 6.0 N
and a vertical force F2 = 9.0 N are then applied to the block. The coefficients of friction
for the block and surface are µs = 0.40 and µk = 0.25. Determine the magnitude of the
block’s acceleration.
7. A car that weighs 1.30 x 104 N is initially moving at 72 km/h when the brakes are applied
and the car is brought to a stop in 40 m. Assuming the force that stops the car is constant,
find the magnitude of that force
8. A 2.0-kg block is initially at rest on a horizontal surface. A horizontal force F1 = 6.0 N
and a vertical force F2 = 9.0 N are then applied to the block. The coefficients of friction
for the block and surface are µs = 0.40 and µk = 0.25. Determine the magnitude of the
frictional force acting on the block.
9. A pendulum consists of a 4.0 kg stone swinging on a 4.0 m string of negligible mass. The
stone has a speed of 5.0 m/s when it passes its lowest point. What is the centripetal
acceleration of the pendulum at its lowest point?
10. A block of mass m = 2.50 kg is pushed a distance d = 3.0 m along a frictionless
horizontal table by a constant applied force of magnitude F = 16.0 N directed at an angle
θ = 30.0° below the horizontal. Determine the work done on the block by the normal
force exerted by the table.
