CE361 Soil Mechanics I

HOMEWORK #4
Due Date: 10 November 2024

Q1. (30p) Compute the flow rate through the soil beneath the concrete dam shown if the permeability of the soil is 4.5x10-3 cm/s.
Find the pore water pressures at points A, B and C and compute the uplift thrust on the dam.

Q2. Everything else being the same, which of the two dams in the figure will experience larger seepage through the underlying soil?
Why? (10p)
Which of the two will have a larger exit hydraulic gradient? Why? (10p)
Which of the two dams will have a larger uplift? Why? (10p)

Q3. (40p) A concrete dam section is shown below. The foundation soil is homogeneous and isotropic. Its permeability is 4x10-
5mm/sec. Also given are G =2.65 and e=0.5. (Need to draw the problem in scale)
s

a. Draw flow net.

b. Calculate seepage beneath the dam
c. Find exit hydraulic gradient.
d. Determine the FS against piping at the toe of the dam
e. Calculate the hydraulic uplift force beneath the dam.
