Glass Blockwork Method Statement

A. Preparation of Work, Materials, and Components
1. Overloading Considerations
When bringing materials and components to the work area, ensuring that the
structure can handle the load is crucial. Avoid overloading the structure, as
this can lead to safety hazards.
2. Scaffolding Planning
For work at heights, plan the scaffolding materials needed. Additionally,
consider the need for extra manpower to assist with lifting glass blocks at
elevated positions.
3. Layout Planning
Anticipate the position of openings and other elements in the work above to
prevent adjustments of units that could result in incorrect or uneven
bonding.

B. Preparation of Mortar Mixes

1. Machine Mixing
Whenever possible, mortar should be mixed using a machine. Hand mixing
may only be used for small quantities and should take place on a watertight
platform.
2. Batch Boxes
When mixing mortar at the site, employ batch boxes to ensure accurate and
consistent mix proportions.
3. Time Limitations
Use mortars (except for retarded mortars) within 2 hours of mixing, or
adhere to the specified timeframe.

C. Building Walls
1. Adhering to specifications
Construct the work within the permissible deviations as specified in the contract.
2. Laying Blocks
Unless otherwise specified or permitted, place blocks on a full bed of mortar and
fill all joints. Follow detailed reinforcement placement instructions, and use
spacers as needed to maintain level courses and vertical alignment. Regularly
check and correct the plumb of quoins and all faces. It's advisable to align
vertically every fifth or sixth perpend and ensure uniform thickness of horizontal
joints.

3. Course Height Limit

Avoid exceeding the specified height for each course as outlined in the contract
specifications.
4. Pointing
If pointing is specified, remove excess mortar from joints as work progresses.
Prepare mortar for pointing as per the specification.
5. Bonding to Adjacent Structures
Bond all work to adjacent structures using stainless steel cramps at the specified
spacing, unless stated otherwise in the contract.
6. Cleaning
Clean all glass blocks as work progresses to maintain a neat appearance and
prevent excess mortar buildup.
This Glass Blockwork Method Statement outlines essential procedures and precautions for
working with glass blocks. Adhering to these guidelines ensures the safe and efficient
completion of the project. Always consult the specific contract specifications for additional
requirements and details related to your project. Safety and quality should remain top
priorities throughout the construction process.

Common questions

Powered by AI

Ensuring that the structure is not overloaded during the distribution of materials and components is crucial because overloading can lead to safety hazards. It may cause structural damage or failure, posing risks to workers' safety and the integrity of the construction work .

To effectively bond glass blockwork to adjacent structures, stainless steel cramps should be used at the specified spacing unless other methods are outlined in the contract. This ensures proper structural integrity and alignment of the glass blockwork with surrounding structures .

Machine mixing of mortar benefits the construction process by ensuring consistent mix proportions, which is crucial for the durability and strength of the mortar. This consistency is more challenging to achieve with hand mixing, especially for large quantities .

It is crucial to clean glass blocks during the work to maintain a neat appearance and prevent the buildup of excess mortar. This practice ensures the blocks remain aesthetically pleasing and supports the overall quality and completion of the project according to specified standards .

When planning scaffolding for work at heights with glass blocks, it is recommended to plan the necessary scaffolding materials and consider the need for additional manpower to assist in lifting the glass blocks to elevated positions. This ensures the safe and efficient execution of work at heights .

Adhering to course height limits according to contract specifications is necessary to ensure structural stability and compliance with engineering standards. It prevents excessive loads and potential instability that may arise from exceeding the designed height .

Mortar mixes should be prepared using a machine to ensure consistency in proportions, except for small quantities where hand mixing on a watertight platform is permissible. Mortars, other than retarded varieties, should be used within two hours of mixing or as specified in the contract. Batch boxes are used to ensure correct and consistent mix proportions when mixing on-site .

Layout planning is significant in glass block installations because it involves anticipating the position of openings and other elements in the work. Proper planning prevents the need for adjustments that could lead to incorrect or uneven bonding, thus maintaining the structural and aesthetic quality of the installation .

Batch boxes play a critical role in the mortar mixing process for glass blockwork by ensuring accurate and consistent mix proportions. This precision is necessary for maintaining the desired characteristics of the mortar, contributing to the structural integrity and appearance of the glass block installation .

Checking metal ties and reinforcement is important to ensure the structural stability and integrity of the glass blockwork. Properly installed ties and reinforcement prevent differential movement and cracking, thus preserving the durability and aesthetic of the construction .
