NCBA Honors Band Wind Instrument Auditions Script
ALL ROOM PROCTORS, please begin by following this procedure:
Step outside the room and close the door. Verify that you have the correct student by saying:
“Are you (INSTRUMENT #___ , NAME)?”
(Example: Are you Flute # 21, Joe Smith? Once you have positively determined the student’s name and
audition number, please escort the student into the room.)
“Judges, this is (INSTRUMENT) #___.” (Example: Judges, this is Flute # 21)
to student: “You may sit or stand for today’s audition.
Once you are set, you may
play a few notes to verify that your instrument is working properly ”
SCALE ROOM PROCTOR, please continue by following this procedure:
“Please find the scale sheet on your stand” (Allow time for student to locate scale sheet.)
“The major scales are listed in the order that you need to play them. The
scales are listed by showing YOUR STARTING PITCH. Please notice the
number of octaves required and the desired articulation for each scale.
Please play all of your required major scales. Once you have finished your
major scales, you may go ahead and play your chromatic scale as well.
You may begin now.”
(Once student is completed…) “Thank You. The scale portion of your audition is
complete.” (Either escort student out of room and hand over their score sheets to the hallway
proctor OR continue with the next section of the audition below.)
SOLO ROOM PROCTOR, please continue by following this procedure:
“Please find the copy of the solo on your stand” (Allow student time to locate solo)
“Please notice that there are no additional cuts to the required solo selection.
You may use your personal copy or the copy that is provided. In rests of 2 or
more measures, you may skip ahead to the next section. You may begin now.”
(Once student is completed…) “Thank You. The solo portion of your audition is
complete.” (Either escort student out of room and hand over their score sheets to the hallway
proctor OR continue with the next section of the audition below.)
SIGHT-READING ROOM PROCTOR, please continue by following this procedure:
“Please find the sight-reading selection on your stand. It should be face down.
Please leave it facing down at this time. (Allow student time to locate the sight-reading.)
“Once you are told to begin looking at the sight-reading selection, you will
have 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, I will ask you to begin playing. At that
time, you may find your starting pitch, if necessary, and start. Please turn
the selection over now so that you can see it. Time begins now.”
(Start the timer immediately.)
(After exactly 60 seconds…) “Time is up. Please begin playing now.”
(Once student is completed…) “Thank You.
Please return the sight-reading selection
to a face down position. Your audition is now complete.” (Escort student out of room
