Introduction

Rhythm is the regular repetition of beat, accent or rise in dance, music, and language. The
word comes from the Greek word rhythmos, meaning measured motion. In dancing, rhythmic
patterns and variations are created by physical motions of shorter or longer duration with greater
or lesser emphasis.

13 | P a g e
Dancing is an act of moving the body in rhythm, usually in time to music. As a form of creation,
dancing, either at a party or any other event is still a very popular way for people to enjoy
themselves and to make new friends.

Why do people dance? Most people dance to have fun or as an entertainment, but it serves
more than these purposes. For many people, dancing provides one of the most personal and
effective means of communication. A dancer expresses such feelings of joy, anger, or helplessness
without saying a word.

Folk dancing is a form of social dance that becomes part of the customs and traditions of
people. It represents the way of living of a nation or an ethnic group.
