Topic – Windmill
Good morning/Good evening to one and all
present here My name is Merlin.
Today I am going to tell about windmill.
Does anyone what is windmill? Everyone says its
machine that produces electricity is that true? OK
but let’s learn more about windmill.
Explanation:
A windmill is machine that harnesses the power of
the wind.
Windmills may be used to grind grain into flour, to
pump water, or to produce electricity.
A windmill has a number of blades that spin
around when wind blows on them.
The blades are mounted on a tall tower or
building.
They are connected to a vertical shaft, or rod.
When the blades spin, they turn the shaft. The
turning shaft powers a device that does work—for
example, a water pump or millstones, which grind
grain.
The shaft also may provide power to a machine
called a generator, which produces electricity.
People in western Asia built the earliest known
windmills more than 1,000 years ago.
They used these windmills to grind grain.
Windmills spread to Europe by the 1100s.
The Dutch used them to pump water out of low-
lying areas near the sea.
By the 1800s, however, many people used steam
engines rather than wind power to run mills and to
do other work.
Today modern windmills, called wind turbines,
produce electricity for many communities. A group
of wind turbines working together is called a wind
farm. Modern wind turbines have one to four
twisted metal blades
Types of Windmills
There are two basic types of windmills based on
their axis of rotation, and they are:
Vertical axis windmills
Horizontal axis windmills
There four types of horizontal axis windmills:
Post mill
Smock mill
Tower mill
Fan mill
There two types of Vertical axis windmills:
The Savonius Model
The Darrieus Model
The Savonius Model:
Savonius wind turbines are a type of vertical-
axis wind turbine, used for converting the force
of wind into torque on a rotating shaft
The Darrieus Model:
The Darrieus wind turbine is type of vertical
axis wind turbine, used to produce electricity
using wind energy. The blade curve of this
turbine allows being stressed only in anxiety at
high rotary speeds.
How Do Windmills Work?
The number of blades of the windmill was
determined after many trial and error methods. It
was found that three blades worked the best and
that’s how every windmill has three
blades. The energy source for windmill is wind.
When the blades come in contact with the wind,
the blades move such that the shaft starts to spin,
resulting in the production of electricity. The
generator converts the mechanical energy into
electrical energy.
Components of Windmill
Following are the components of windmill:
Blades: These are the essential component of
the windmill, and they control the functioning
of rotor speed.
Rotor: Rotor is also known as a propeller.
Anemometer: This component is used for
measuring the wind speed.
Tower: This is the support system holding the
blades and propeller together.
Uses of Windmill
The main purpose of windmill is to convert wind
energy into electrical energy, and when electrical
energy is obtained, the following are the ways it is
used:
For pumping of groundwater.
Extraction of oil from the seeds.
Milling of the grain
Now it’s QUSTION TIME!!
