Metonymy
Metonymy is a figure of speech in which words are replaced with
associated or related words. The word comes from the Greek phrase
metōnymía, which means “a change of name.”
A metonym is usually only part of a larger whole. For example,
“wheels” is a metonym for “car.” While the wheels are only a part of
the car, in this metonym, they represent the car in its entirety. Here is
another example:
The pen is mightier than the sword.
In this example, the word “pen” is a metonym for “the written word”
and the word “sword” is a metonym for “military force.”
