A STUDY ON DEPOTS OF VIYYUR SERVICE CO-OPERATIVE BANK LTD. NO.

177

1.1 INTRODUCTION

“The essence of a role-playing game is that it is a group, co-operative

experience”

Gray Gygax

The word co-operation is derived from the Latin word “Co – operari”, which
means “working together”. In other words, co-operation means working
together with others for a common purpose. The principal of co-operation is
as old as human society. It is the basis of domestic and social life. The co-
operation effort is the group instinct in man which enable him to live
together, work together and help each other in times of stress and strain.

In the primitive societies the germs of co-operation could be

observed in religious institutions and traditional customs. The spirit of village
communities of India was almost entirely co-operative. Co-operation in an
economic system was born as a peaceful reaction against the industrial
revolution which had resulted in the concentration of wealth, mass poverty
and degradation. The industrial revolution gave rise to capitalism which
resulted in property less, money less and homeless people.

Co-operation as a new philosophy, developed as a result

against capitalism and irrational [Link]-operation is originated as a
defensive bulwark against exploitation of the wealth by those in a stronger
economic position.

International Co-operative alliance (ICA) defines “A co-operative society is

an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their

common economic, social and cultural needs and aspiration through a jointly
owned and democratically controlled enterprise.”

1.2 CO-OPERATIVE MOVEMENT IN INDIA

government took initiative for organizing co-operative societies by passing
co-operative credit societies Act of [Link] was under certain circumstances
like famine, poverty, exploitation, and indebtedness, which necessitated the
introduction of a new idea by the Indian Government. The farming
community in India was heavily under debt and was greatly exploited by the
money lenders. For the last so many years India under British rule, the main
occupation was agriculture. The poor farmers depended on money lenders for
loans, and they charged exorbitant rate of interest. They become poorer and
poorer.

The movement was introduced as a Government policy Montague

Chelmsford Act Of 1919 made co-operation a state subject. Frederic
Nicholson was considered as “father of co-operative movement in India.

1.3 CO-OPERATIVE MOVEMENT IN KERALA

After the re-organization of states on linguistic basis, the Kerala state came in
to force on 1st November [Link] area of the state was included princely
state Cochin, Travancore and Malabar region of Madras Province. Shri, c.
Rajagopalachari who was then Diwan of cochin state took initiative for the
enactment of Cochin Co-operative societies Act of 1913 in Cochin area. He
was the registrar of co-operative societies in Madras. The Edawanakad
agricultural credit society was the first co-operative society registered as per
this Act…The Travancore Cochin co-operative societies Act of 1951 and the
Madras co-operative societies Act of 1932 in Malabar region were continued

The Viyyur Service Co-operative Bank plays a significant role in community development through its diverse non-banking activities. These include Neethi Medical Stores, Consumer Stores, Fertilizer Depots, and special initiatives like the Onam-Chanda and cash awards for students, contributing to controlling agricultural and consumer goods prices and providing support during festivals. The bank's involvement in non-banking activities supports economic stability and community welfare, engendering trust and dependence from the local population .

Viyyur Service Co-operative Bank balances its financial objectives with its social responsibilities by aligning its banking and non-banking activities with community welfare goals. Financially, it ensures profitability and reserves while providing a 15% dividend. Socially, it engages in initiatives like price control through consumer stores, educational awards, and community-enhancing projects like medical stores and agricultural support. This dual focus ensures that while fulfilling financial stability, the bank supports the socioeconomic well-being of its members and the broader community .

The Cochin Co-operative Societies Act of 1913 started the formal recognition of cooperative societies in the region. With the Travancore Cochin Co-operative Societies Act of 1951 and the Madras Co-operative Societies Act of 1932 applied in the Malabar region, regulations shifted until the Kerala Co-operative Societies Act of 1969 unified these into a single framework upon its enactment. This Act came into effect on May 15, 1969, consolidating various regional approaches and providing a comprehensive regulatory structure with 110 sections and 201 rules .

Over the past five years, Viyyur Service Co-operative Bank has experienced fluctuations in various deposit categories, maintaining a general trend of increase until a slight decline in total deposits in 2021-2022. Fixed deposits showed a marginal decrease, while savings deposits increased steadily. Daily deposit trends fluctuated, showing improvements towards the study's end period. The overall trend in total deposits reflects a growth plateau, indicating a possible need for revitalizing deposit mobilization strategies .

Viyyur Service Co-operative Bank's financial structure is geared towards meeting member needs through diverse deposit schemes like fixed deposits, savings accounts, and recurring deposits, which are tailored with varied interests and terms to cater to different saving needs. The bank’s emphasis on maintaining a strong financial base through profits and reserves, and its commitment to dispersing advances and loans for agricultural needs, highlight its strategic focus on member support and economic participation .

The study on Viyyur Service Co-operative Bank is limited by its reliance on past records and the data's reliability, which may affect the accuracy of its conclusions. The five-year scope provides an overview but may not indicate future performances due to the brevity and specific conditions captured in the data. Additionally, the short ten-day data collection period limits the depth of analysis possible, which restricts comprehensive understanding and may lead to skewed conclusions .

The Viyyur Service Co-operative Bank started as 'VIYYUR PARASPARA SAHAYA SANGHAM' on April 26, 1927. It then became 'Viyyur Co-operative Society' on January 19, 1968, and was later renamed to Viyyur Service Co-operative Bank. Over the years, the bank was elevated in classification to a Class 1 special grade from an A class standing, indicating its improved ranking in audit classifications. It has adapted modern banking technologies like RTGS and NEFT for enhanced service .

Viyyur Service Co-operative Bank offers tailored deposit schemes with favorable terms for different groups. Senior citizens benefit from slightly higher interest rates across different term deposits compared to regular depositors, fostering inclusivity and catering to their financial needs. These benefits enhance savings attractiveness and ensure that the bank caters to a broad demographic spectrum across its operating region .

The study employed both primary and secondary data collection methods, including discussion with the bank's staff and examination of various bank records such as balance sheets and audit reports. Percentage analysis was used on data spanning five years. While these methods provide a reasonable retrospective view and facilitate quantitative analysis of deposits, the limited duration of the study and potential biases from interviews can limit its effectiveness. The reliance on past data also curtails the ability to project future trends accurately .

The adoption of modern banking facilities like RTGS, NEFT, and mobile banking through 'My Bank' has significantly enhanced Viyyur Service Co-operative Bank's operational efficiency. These technologies enable faster transaction processing, improved customer service, and reduced dependence on traditional banking hours. This technological integration has allowed the bank to meet contemporary banking standards, improving customer satisfaction and operational effectiveness .
