COBE Problem Solving Model

1. Problem Statement (one sentence): "The problem seems to be ..."

The problem is that the COBE would like to be considered a top ranked business college
and therefore needs to increase job placement for its graduates to 95% or higher.

2. Probable Causes (A, B, C, etc), each should be rated for likelihood (e.g. A -
Hi, B - Hi, C - Low, D - Med)
A-High) Students don’t know where to start in their job search after graduation

B-Medium) Students don't feel like educating themselves on career finding skills prior to
graduation is important enough or find it an inconvenience

C-Low/Medium) No knowledge of events or workshops are offered by COBE to teach

them job search and interview skills

D-Low) Students are unfamiliar with career tools such as LinkedIn

3. Restatement of the Problem: "The underlying problem is..."

The underlying problem is a disconnect between the student body and the necessary
programs that will help them get a job placement after graduation

4. List 3-5 feasible solutions. (If you are doing this solo, list 2-3 feasible
solutions)
Have a required career class, for all COBE students, that teaches them important tools for
finding jobs and interviewing.

Make connections with companies who will regularly be hiring for entry level positions
in the COBE fields (accounting, finance, etc).

Require professors to announce important events, workshops, and possible internship

opportunities in class that COBE is hosting.

Have a running list of companies in the region offering different job openings. The list
should be organized by field and have a link to apply for each opening.
5. Select the best solution. Explain why it was selected

Have a required career class, for all COBE students, that teaches them important tools for
finding jobs and interviewing.

This is the best solution because it will assist with all of the issues we listed. This class
will give students knowledge of what public and COBE tools are available to them, it will
force students who aren’t taking learning these skills seriously to pay attention, and it will
give students an idea as to where to start when searching for jobs.

Common questions

Professors play a critical role by announcing important events, workshops, and possible internship opportunities within classes. This in-class communication ensures that students stay informed about career development opportunities, facilitating better integration of academic learning with career readiness components .

Making career education a required component can foster a sense of seriousness and necessity around job readiness. It compels students to prioritize acquiring career skills and appreciate their importance in post-graduation success, potentially changing passive attitudes towards proactive career planning .

Unfamiliarity with tools like LinkedIn can significantly impede students' job search success by limiting their access to a broader professional network, insights into company cultures, and trending industry practices. It also negates the opportunity for students to market themselves effectively to potential employers .

The COBE problem solving model aims to increase job placement rates to enhance its reputation as a top-ranked business college. High job placement rates are indicative of the institution's success in preparing students for their careers, which in turn attracts prospective students and maintains the institution's competitive edge .

While a career class can provide foundational skills and awareness, its effectiveness could be limited by factors such as varying student motivation levels, differences in individual career aspirations, and the dynamic nature of the job market which might require adaptive skills beyond what a class can cover .

Maintaining a running list of job openings is feasible due to its targeted approach in directly linking students to potential employers. It requires efficient information management but, once established, can significantly ease access to job opportunities. The organizational aspect would involve collaboration with local companies and regular updates to remain relevant .

Successful implementation of job placement solutions could enhance employer perceptions of COBE graduates as well-prepared and adaptable, leading to increased recruitment from the college. It could also position COBE as a model institution for integrating career readiness within the academic curriculum, thereby elevating its status in both educational and corporate communities .

The disconnect arises primarily due to students' lack of knowledge on how to start their job search and a perceived inconvenience in educating themselves on career skills. Additionally, inadequate awareness of available workshops and career tools such as LinkedIn contribute to this disconnect .

A mandatory career class is considered effective because it directly addresses multiple issues identified in the problem statement. It provides essential job search and interview skills, encourages students to seriously engage with career preparation, and offers guidance on available resources and initiating a job search. This comprehensive approach targets the root causes of the disconnect .

Establishing connections with companies can facilitate a steady stream of entry-level job opportunities for graduates in relevant fields like accounting and finance. This not only aids in immediate job placement but also strengthens the college's network for future collaborations and enhances graduate employability .
