101 Elements of Macroeconomics Fall 2022 SYLLABUS

Course Structure:
1. Wednesday and Friday mornings, Professor Barbera will lecture. The lectures will cover the principles of macroeconomics, as well
as current developments and policy issues. The lectures will generally include PowerPoint slides. The slides, in such
circumstances, will also be posted. Note that the slides will offer a skeletal outline of the material, capturing perhaps 50% of the
content.
2. Section meetings, Mondays or Tuesdays, will be taught by teaching assistants (TAs), who are graduate students in the Department
of Economics. You will be required to attend each of these section meetings, in the specified classroom for each section. The
purpose of the section meetings is to review lecture material, problem sets, and quizzes and to answer questions. You should
think of the course as being taught jointly by Dr. Barbera and your TA.
3. Special section meetings, on three specified occasions (see attached), will be hosted by Dr. Barbera. On those occasions, students
will be asked to converse about pre-specified real-world topics, from the vantage point of an economist. (Note: For the three
sections that you attend with Dr. Barbera, you will be directed to a recording of the material covered in normal sections, for that
week.)
4. Course discussions will unfold on PIAZZA. Any student may ask a question of Professor Barbera, anonymously if they wish. Both
the question and Dr. Barbera’s answer will be visible to all class participants. In addition, when a question is asked, other students
can answer said question, and Dr. Barbera will comment on both the question and the answer(s).
All course materials, power points, problem sets, additional readings, answers to problem sets, and exams, as well as pertinent
announcements will be posted on Campus.

Readings
The textbook for the course is: Macroeconomics, by R. G. Hubbard and A. P. O’Brien, 8th, 7th or 6th Edition, Pearson Education, Inc./Prentice
Hall Publishing (ISBN-10: 0132951592, ISBN-13: 9780132951593). The text is available at the bookstore.
Each lecture has a corresponding reading assignment, laid out in the course outline. In most cases the readings are from the Hubbard text.
Other readings will be provided on the website. There is also a study guide available at the bookstore: Study Guide for Hubbard and
O’Brien’s Macroeconomics, Pearson Education, Inc./Prentice Hall Publishing. Some find such study guides to be very helpful, but it is not
required.
Homework, Quizzes, Final Exam and Grading
There are 7 homeworks, 2 quizzes, a final. You’re expected to attend regular section meetings, and Dr. Barbera hosted meetings. Grading:

Homeworks will be corrected, and handing in homeworks will affect your TA section grade, but homeworks will not be assigned a grade.
Important policy (1): Students will be excused from a quiz, reflecting illness, family emergency, or other extreme circumstance must
notify Dr. Barbera by email before the quiz period begins, or they will receive a zero on the quiz. A student who has been properly
excused from a quiz will not take a make-up, and their course grade will be based on their letter grades with revised weights. A student
who has been excused from the final exam will take a make-up.
