Product Load Calculation
module 3: PRODUCT LOAD CALCULATION
• It is a theoretical calculation of the heat
load from different products for the
required refrigeration process.
• These products serves as the heat
source for the extraction of heat at the
low-temperature side of a refrigeration
system.
Types of Product Load
module 3: PRODUCT LOAD CALCULATION
• Sensible Heat Load – the amount of heat required by the
product to change its temperature without changing its
phase.
𝑄𝑠 = 𝑚𝐶𝑝 ∆𝑇
• Latent Heat Load – the amount of heat required by a
product to change its phase without changing its
temperature.
𝑄𝐿 = 𝑚𝐿
Sample Problem
module 3: PRODUCT LOAD CALCULATION
1. 100 kg of water at 25 deg.
Celsius turns to ice at -15
deg. Celsius in 6 hours. How
much heat is needed for the
transformation?
ANS: 2.18 kW

2. Magnolia Dairy product
must cool 4000 gallons of
fresh milk from the farm from
an initial temperature of 80ºF
to a temperature of 38ºF in 5
hours. If the density of the
milk is 8.6 lb/gal, sg = 1.03
and Cp = 0.935 BTU/lb-R,
how much brine (gal) must be
circulated, if the change in
temperature of brine is 15ºF,
sg = 1.182 and Cp = 0.729
BTU/lb-R?
ANS: 12530 gal.

3. Three tons of fish are to
be stored at a temperature of
-10°C in 24 hours. The
product enters the chiller at
a temperature of 24°C and
the specific heats above and
below freezing are 0.76
kCal/kg-°C and 0.41
kCal/kg-°C, respectively, and
its latent heat of fusion is 51
kCal/kg. If the freezing
temperature of the product is
-2.2°C, determine the
product load in kCal/hr.
ANS: 9263.75 kCal/hr

frozen and chilled to a final
temperature of -16°C for storage in
12 hours. Compute the product
