Generation gap

1. Definition: a situation in which older and younger people do not understand each other
because of their different experiences, opinions, habits,....etc.
2. Manifestation:
 Generation gap through the language used by generations:
- New "inventions" in language such as slang, teencode, and
abbreviations all create disagreements about everyday
communication in the home, school, and workplace.
 Using technology:
- The younger generation connects with each other more easily
through phones, messaging apps or social networks. This makes them
even more independent and different from parents who are not
familiar with the arts.
 Different opinions:
- The third factor is that parents and children generally see things
from different perspectives. Choosing a career is a good example
for this. Many parents try to impose certain careers they favour on
their children, based on their own perceptions. However, young
people don't always understand their parents' points of views.
Instead, they prefer to be free to make their own decisions on their
future career.
3. Solution :

 Improving communication. This is the best way to increase understanding

of each other hence reducing the generation gap.
 Dealing with mismatches. Identifying some mismatches in the family and
working on them will reduce the generation gap.
 Keeping up with trends. For parents, it is important to update your
thoughts on the current issues concerning your children like technology.
 It is important for parents to give ample time to their children. This will
build their relationship, and they will understand each other more.
 Children and parents should both give each other space. This helps to
increase the respect and value of each person’s thoughts.
 Cultivating love in relations. This brings everyone closer, and children are
not tempted to drift away from their parents.
