Research Exercise 2: The Research Question

Problem Sheet 2
The Research Question
1. My (restated) research problem is: How does the Use of Internet affect the academic performance of senior high
school students?
2. My research question(s) is/are:
a. Does Internet influence the academic performance of students?
b. Does the use of Internet positively affect the academic performance of students? How?
c. Does the use of Internet negatively affect the academic performance of students? How?
d. Are the factors like sex, age differences, and frequency of usage of Internet significant in terms of how
Internet influence the students?
3. The following are the key terms in the problem or question that are not clear and thus need to be defined:
a. academic performance
b. internet
c. senior high school students
4. Here are my constitutive definitions for these terms:
a. Academic performance refers to a student’s success in meeting short or long-term goals in education.
b. A smartphone is a cellular phone that performs many of the functions of a computer, typically having a
touchscreen interface, Internet access, and an operating system capable of running downloaded applications.
c. A senior high school student refers to a person enrolled in the last two years of the K to 12 program which
goes through a core curriculum and subjects under a track of his/her choice.
5. Here are my operational definitions for these terms:
a. In this study, academic performance refers to the grade point average (GPA) of senior high school students in
two semesters of one school year.
b. In this study, Internet refer a computer network consisting of a worldwide network of computer networks that
use the TCP/IP network protocols to facilitate data transmission and exchange.
c. Senior high school students are the subjects of this study. Samples may be obtained from the three different
strands in which students are enrolled: Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) Strand, Humanities
and Social Sciences (HUMSS) Strand, and General Academic Strand (GAS).
6. My rationale for investigating this question/problem (why I would argue that it is an important question to
investigate) is as follows:
We are now in the 21st century and along with computers, Internet is of huge importance and has been a
commodity. Surveys show that through Internet, communication has been made possible in the case of OFWs
and is a big hit among adolescents. Several researchers have found out that the use of Internet in schools is
problematic. Internet can provide instant access to the torrential information exposing adolescents to different
kinds of content—mostly are unreliable and inaccurate not to mention easy access social media and pornographic
sites which affect their morale. Mobile phones with internet access is a common sight in our schools today along
with high-end gadgets that would allow them to text, chat, update their social media accounts, download, upload,
stream and surf the Internet. Indeed, globalization has changed the way in how we communicate and maybe,
think. Research on the influence of Internet on our schools today has not been given much attention that is why
this study on the influence of Internet on the academic performance of students must be conducted.
