How to Write an Introductory Paragraph

1. General to specific / Background ınformation /Stating the problem

( MUST )

General to specific : Move from a general point towards the narrowed

topic. However pay attention to how general you start.

Background Information : It is possible to state chronological data or

historical information with or without refering to sources

Stating the problem : In some cases, it is better to define and state

problems first and mention the key ideas that will be discussed. Refer to
sources ıf necessary and do not forget to cite in case of adding source
information.

 You can use all general to specific, background info and stating the
problem OR you may prefer to use only one of them at the beginning
of introduction paragraph

2. Define the term / concept ( MUST )

You are required to define technical terms related to topic, especially if
the terminology needs to be clarified. Refer to sources for a more
scientific definition and do not forget to cite. For this definition part, it is
possible to do Dırect Quotation .

Or

You can use sentence definition pattern

Term + class + specific features

Example : A robot is an agent that operates automatically with the help

of a computer programme.

Or

As defined by Taiwan University of Science and Technology, a robotic

arm is a programmable mechanism which performs tedious and difficult
tasks repetitively ( 2003 )
3. Describe the circumstance or situation regarding this problem . Also you
can mention statements which indicate the importance of topic
( OPTIONAL )

Assure readers the topic is worth studying .Give more details about the
problem

4. Provide specific information / evidence to show the importance of the

topic. ( OPTIONAL )

 Previous work on topic : Studies conducted on this topic by other

researchers might be stated
 Statistics, examples, and memorable events might be stated. If you
are refering the sources, remember to use suitable citation rules .

Outside sources could be used to provide evidence and support to indicate

the importance of the problem. Do not forget to quote, paraphrase, or
summarize the original information with correct citation techniques.)

5. Write a thesis statement

Thesis statement mentioned on outline needs to be cut and paste. Remember,

no apostrophe shoud be used in thesis statement.s

Example Introduction following steps above

Topic : Nanotechnology in textile industry

Opening and background information: Curious nature of mankind allows

the making of significant innovations. The quest for the best and more
advanced always leads to new discoveries as preceding work becomes
unsatisfactory. The most amazing breakthroughs have been achieved by
scientists in the last century.

Definition : One recent advance in the scientific world is nanotechnology

which permits the manipulation of atoms at a nanometer (1 billionth of a
meter) level.
Quotation: It was in 1959 that the notion of nanotechnology first arose,
when American physicist Richard P. Feynman asked the question, “Why
cannot we write the entire 24 volumes of the Encyclopedia Britannica on the
head of a pin?” (Feynman quoted in Jones, Feynman and Nanotechnology,
n.d )

Previous work: The late 1980s saw the emergence of extensive research in
the field of nanotechnology with the book Engines of Creation by K. Eric
Dexler . The textile industry is among the leading industries to have
benefited from the revolution of nanotechnology. Fabrics specially treated
with nanoscale applications have initiated a huge development in textiles,
now widely known as smart textiles. The attachment of nanoparticles to the
surface of fabrics has resulted in various useful functions making them
impervious to various chemicals and liquids.

Sentences which show the importance of the topic: The functions of smart
textiles have proved to be indispensable for many different areas. These high
performance garments are taking clothing to an entirely new level.
Applications of nanotechnology into textiles will surely provide very
important performance innovations in many fields such as healthcare, sports
and military. Current techniques applied on nanoscale will make it possible
to alter or to extend the functionalities of textiles, while adding intelligence
to them.

Thesis: Without doubt, these smart textiles enhanced with nanotechnology

will have a superior place in the sector as they present unique protective,
functional and electronic features.
