EXACT COLLEGES OF ASIA

Chapter 3

Research Methodology

This section includes an overview of the research design, data collection

methods, data analysis procedures, and ethical considerations. By providing a clear

framework, this chapter aims to establish the rigor and validity of the research process

while justifying the selection of (Type of Research) for an in-depth exploration of the

subject matter.

Research Design

The researcher will employ a mixed method to this study. The term “mixed

methods” refers to an emergent methodology of research that advances the systematic

integration, or “mixing,” of quantitative and qualitative data within a single investigation

or sustained program of inquiry. The basic premise of this methodology is that such

integration permits a more complete and synergistic utilization of data than do separate

quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis. The researcher will begin the

investigation by using qualitative methods and will observe and talk in depth with the

individuals and group of individuals engaged in this study. Moreover, using the data

derived from the qualitative methods, the researcher will then develop instrument that

will give quantitative measures. The survey instrument will allow the researcher to

explore the responses of the respondents into more detailed process.

Research Locale (Sample Only)

The University of Santo Tomas, the Pontifical, Royal, and Catholic University of

the Philippines, is a Dominican institution of learning founded in 1611, under the

patronage of St. Thomas Aquinas. The University of Santo Tomas, in pursuit of truth

guided by reason and illumined by faith, dedicates herself to the generation,

advancement, integration, dissemination, and application of knowledge to form

competent and compassionate persons committed to serve the Church, the nation, and

the global community. The geographical location is presented in figure 2.

Sampling techniques

For the purpose of this study, the method of purposive sampling was used to

develop the sample of the research under discussion. According to this method, which

belongs to the category of non-probability sampling techniques, sample members are

selected on the basis of their knowledge, relationships and expertise regarding a

research subject (Freedman et al., 2007). In this study, the sample members have

special relationship with the phenomenon under investigation.

Data gathering procedure (Data Collection Method)

Data will be collected through a semi-structured interview with the participants.

Accordingly, interviews will be conducted with the tertiary educators who have

relationship with the study. The approximate time of each interview will be 30 to 60

minutes. Overall, the interviews are expected to last for a period of one and a half

month. The interviews will be then written and prepared for analysis.

Data analysis

The data analysis of this study will be using the thematic analysis method.

Accordingly, tertiary educators that teaches under this new normal of education will be

the main subject. In the next step, interview notes for each interview will be carefully

studied to identify all independent ideas in the form of basic themes; then, a dedicated

code will be assigned to each of them as a marker. Next, based on all the basic themes

identified in the entire research, a more general categorization will be defined which will

lead to the identification of organizing themes, and eventually these themes will be

categorized as inclusive themes.

Ethical consideration

There are few ethical issues, which the researcher has to take into consideration

for this study. The most important one is related with the informed consent of the

participants. All of the participants will be informed in advance about the purposes of

this study, and give their informed consent to participate in writing.

The anonymity of participants will be protected by numerically coding each

returned questionnaire and keeping the responses confidential. While conducting the

individual interviews with the selected respondents, they will be assigned fictitious

names for use in their description and reporting the results. All study data, including the

survey electronic files, interview recordings, and transcripts, will be keep confidentially.

Participants will be told summary data will be disseminated to the professional

community, but in no way, it will be possible to trace responses to individuals.

Finally, all the information collected in the course of this research has been used

only for the purposes of the study, and will be kept confidential.
