SMART MEDICINE BOX

ABSTRACT

Managing complex medication schedules can be challenging, often leading to missed or incorrect
doses. This project presents the design and construction of an advanced automatic pill dispenser
using an Arduino microcontroller, aimed at improving medication adherence and minimizing
human error. The dispenser features a servo motor that controls a rotating paddle wheel with
compartments for pills, ensuring the correct dosage is dispensed at predefined times. A real-time
clock (RTC) module is employed to maintain accurate timing for dispensing. A liquid crystal
display (LCD) is included to show the current time, date, and important messages, while a buzzer
and LEDs provide audible and visual alerts to notify users when it's time to take their medication.
The dispenser incorporates a locking mechanism that prevents unauthorized access to the pills,
ensuring security and proper usage. A notification system is also included, which tracks whether
the user has taken the medication. This system can send alerts via mobile apps or text messages to
caregivers or users, confirming when a dose has been taken or reminding them if a dose is missed.
This customizable and user-friendly solution offers a reliable method for managing medications,
particularly for individuals with complex regimens or cognitive impairments, while also ensuring
safety and compliance. This paper presents an advanced medicine intake monitoring and control
system. The proposed system consists on a smart medicine box that is designed to help patients
taking their medications on time. Two main features are implemented during the design phase of
this system: the first one is the safety feature that will alarm the patient in case of not taking
and/or bad dosage taking for medication, will keep the medication out of reach of the children
and will be used in case of failure of one of the system’s components whereas the second feature is
the low cost of the system. This box will be linked to a phone application that can signal several
alarms mainly when the medications are about to finish, the patient forgets to take his medication
or he (she) doesn’t take the required dose . An advanced medicine box monitoring, analysis and
control system is proposed in this paper. The latter design is based on a smart and safe medical
box that assists patients in taking their pills treatment on time.

The smart medicine box incorporates backup alarms and secure medication storage to handle potential system failures. By ensuring safety features remain operational—such as alarms to alert users to missed doses and secure locking to prevent unauthorized access—the system maintains reliability even when some components might fail, ensuring continuous medication management .

The integration of a real-time clock (RTC) module enhances the functionality of the automatic pill dispenser by maintaining accurate timing for dispensing medications at predefined times. This ensures that dosages are administered when due, thereby improving medication adherence and reducing human error .

The inclusion of audio-visual alerts in the pill dispenser design significantly enhances utility for users with cognitive impairments by providing multiple cues that can aid memory and response. Buzzer sounds and LED lights serve as immediate reminders, helping to compensate for forgetfulness or inattention by drawing clear focus to the action needed—taking medication—thus boosting adherence and management efficacy .

The use of a servo motor in the pill dispenser offers precise control over the movement of the rotating paddle wheel, which is critical for accurately dispensing the correct dosage at scheduled times. Compared to manual or less precise mechanical methods, this ensures a high level of reliability and adherence without user intervention at each dosing time .

The LCD display plays a crucial role in the operation of the advanced pill dispenser by showing current time, date, and important messages related to medication schedules. This visual interface aids users in verifying the time and ensures they are aware of any updates or alerts pertinent to their medication regimen, enhancing usability .

The smart medicine box ensures security by incorporating a locking mechanism that prevents unauthorized access to pills, safeguarding the medication from children and unauthorized persons. It assures user compliance by sending alerts via mobile apps or text messages to caregivers or users, confirming when a dose has been taken or reminding them if a dose is missed, thereby improving adherence and accountability .

The notification system in the pill dispenser can be configured to support both patients and caregivers by sending alerts through mobile apps or texts about the status of medication intake. For example, caregivers can receive alerts if a dose is missed, and patients can receive reminders when it’s time to take their medication. This dual-communication ensures all parties are kept informed, facilitating better coordination and adherence .

The key safety features of the smart medicine box include an alarm system that notifies the user of missed doses or incorrect dosing, and a locking mechanism to secure medications out of children's reach. These features enhance its effectiveness by ensuring correct and timely medication intake, while preventing unauthorized access, thus maintaining both safety and adherence .

The medicine box addresses the issue of medication running out by using a phone application that can signal alarms when medications are about to finish. This feature is critical as it prompts timely refills, ensuring that patients do not miss doses due to depleted supplies. Its implications for patient care include uninterrupted treatment and improved overall health outcomes through consistent medication adherence .

Deployment challenges in homes with users who have varying technical proficiency include ensuring that the interface is intuitive and easy to understand for less tech-savvy users. Training might be required to familiarize users with setup and operation procedures. Ensuring reliable notification delivery and troubleshooting technical issues could also pose challenges, highlighting the need for robust customer support and user guides .
