INTRODUCTION TO PROCESSORS

In computing and computer science, a processor or processing unit is

an electrical component (digital circuit) that performs operations on an external
data source, usually memory or some other data stream. It typically takes the
form of a microprocessor, which can be implemented on a single or a few
tightly integrated metal–oxide–semiconductor integrated circuit chips. In the
past, processors were constructed using multiple individual vacuum
tubes, multiple individual transistors, or multiple integrated circuits.
The term is frequently used to refer to the central processing unit (CPU), the
main processor in a system. However, it can also refer to other coprocessors,
such as a graphics processing unit (GPU).
Traditional processors are typically based on silicon; however, researchers have
developed experimental processors based on alternative materials such
as carbon nanotubes,[9] graphene,[10] diamond,[11] and alloys made of
elements from groups three and five of the periodic table. Transistors made of a
single sheet of silicon atoms one atom tall and other 2D materials have been
researched for use in processors. Quantum processors have been created; they
use quantum superposition to represent bits (called qubits) instead of only an
on or off state.
TYPES OF PROCESSORS
The different types of processors used in computers includes:
1)Central processing unit(CPU):
central processing unit (CPU), principal part of any
digital computer system, generally composed of the main memory,
control unit, and arithmetic-logic unit. It constitues the physical heart
of the entire computer system; to it is linked
various peripheral equipment, including input/output
devicesand auxiliary storage units. In modern computers, the CPU is
contained on an integrated chipcalled a microprocessors

[Link] Processing Units (GPU):

Graphics processing technology has evolved to

deliver unique benefits in the world of computing. The
latest graphics processing units (GPUs) unlock new
possibilities in gaming, content creation, machine learning,
and more.

The graphics processing unit, or GPU, has become one

of the most important types of computing technology, both
for personal and business computing. Designed for parallel
processing, the GPU is used in a wide range of
applications, including graphics and video rendering.

Although they’re best known for their capabilities in gaming, GPUs are becoming
more popular for use in creative production and artificial intelligence (AI).

[Link]-Core Processors, Microprocessors and Quantum Processors.

A multi-core processor is an integrated circuit with two or more processors

connected to it for faster simultaneous processing of several tasks, reduced power
consumption, and for greater performance. Generally, it is made up of two or more
processors that read and execute program instructions.

-->>A microprocessor is the predominant type of modern computer processor. It

combines the components and function of a central processing unit (CPU) into a
single integrated circuit (IC) or a few connected Ics.
-->> quantum processing unit, or QPU for short, is the brain of a quantum computer. It
is where the qubits reside, and where computation takes place. Like the central
processing unit, or CPU, of a classical computer, a QPU needs quite a bit of supporting
infrastructure. Also like a CPU, that supporting infrastructure can vary quite a bit. In
fact, quantum computer hardware varies considerably more than classical computer
hardware at this point.
