Design Base Shear – Definition

“ Design base shear is the total lateral force or shear at

the base of the structures due to earthquake i.e. seismic
waves and is equal to the seismic design forces at each
level of the structure.”

Design Base Shear - Equation

According to UBC-97, Clause 1630.2.1, following equation

(30.1) is given for design base shear

Ca/Cv = Seismic Coefficient based on Soil type and seismic zone

I = Importance factor depends on type of building
R = Response modification factor depends on structural type
T = Time Period
W = total unfactored Dead and live load of the structure

Total Effective Weight – W

Total effective weight include following unfactored loads

o Total dead load.
o 25% of the live load in storage or warehouses.
o Load of any permanent equipment.
o 75% of the snow load when it is greater than 30 psf.
o Actual partition load or 10 psf whichever is minimum.

Example – Design Base Shear Calculations

A four storey steel special moment resisting frame office building is to

be constructed in seismic zone 4. Typical floor and elevation plan of
moment resisting frame is given along with the seismic information
about the structure.
