22. Read the following and answer the questions given below:

Light of all the colour travel at the same speed in vacuum for all wavelengths. But in any transparent medium

(glass or water), the light of different colours travel with different speeds for different wavelength that means

that the refractive index of a particular medium is different for different wavelength. As there is a difference

in their speeds, the light of different colour bend through different angles. The speed of violet colour is

maximum and the speed of red colour is minimum in glass so, the red light deviates least and violet colour

deviates most. Hence, higher the wavelength of a colour of light, smaller the refractive index and less is the

bending of light.
𝜆𝑟 > 𝜆𝑣 and 𝑟𝑛 < 𝑣𝑛 . Also frequency, 𝑣 = 𝑐/𝜆.

(i) Which of the following statements is correct regarding the propagation of light of different colours of

white light in air?

(c) Violet > Red > Green

(d) Green > Red > Blue

(iv) Which colour which has maximum frequency

(a) Red

(b) Violet

(c) Blue

(d) Green
23. A metal carbonate 𝑋 reacting with acid gives a gas that gives the carbonate back when passed through a solution Y . On

the other hand, a gas G obtained at the anode during electrolysis of brine is passed on dry 𝑌, it gives a compound 𝑍,

used for disinfecting drinking water. Identity X, Y, G and Z .

24. We also think about our actions. Writing, talking, moving a chair, clapping at the end of a programme are examples of

voluntary actions which are based on deciding what to do next. So, the brain also has to send messages to muscles. This

is the second way in which the nervous system communicates with the muscles. The communication between the

central nervous system and the other parts of the body is facilitated by the peripheral nervous system consisting of

cranial nerves arising from the brain and spinal nerves arising from the spinal cord. The brain thus allows us to think

and take actions based on that thinking.

ii) What are the function of medulla?

iii) Which fluid is present in our brain?

The peripheral nervous system is responsible for facilitating communication between the central nervous system (CNS) and other parts of the body. It consists of cranial nerves arising from the brain and spinal nerves from the spinal cord, enabling the execution of voluntary actions based on decisions made by the brain. This system ensures that signals are sent to muscles to act according to the brain's instructions for voluntary tasks like writing or moving objects .

When a base reacts with a non-metallic oxide, a salt and water are formed, indicating that non-metallic oxides are acidic in nature. For example, when calcium hydroxide (a base) reacts with carbon dioxide (a non-metal oxide), calcium carbonate (a salt) and water are produced: Ca(OH)₂ + CO₂ → CaCO₃ + H₂O. This reaction exemplifies the acid-base nature of non-metal oxides .

The defect is known as hypermetropia or farsightedness, where objects close to the eye are blurred. It is corrected using convex lenses, which converge light rays before they enter the eye, allowing images to focus correctly on the retina. Assuming a near point of 25 cm for a normal eye, if someone cannot see clearly within 50 cm, the lens power required for correction is +2 diopters, calculated by the formula P = 1/f = 1/0.50 - 1/0.25 .

The medulla oblongata, located in the hindbrain, is crucial for controlling involuntary functions such as breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure. It acts as a relay station, transmitting signals between the brain and the spinal cord, and contains centers for reflexes like coughing and swallowing. The medulla’s regulation of these autonomic processes is essential for survival and maintaining homeostasis .

In a glass medium, different colors of light travel at different speeds because the refractive index varies with wavelength. Violet light, having the shortest wavelength, travels the slowest and deviates the most, whereas red light, with the longest wavelength, travels the fastest and deviates the least. Thus, the refractive index is inversely proportional to the wavelength, causing this differentiation in speed within the medium .

Compound Z, formed when gas G (chlorine) reacts with compound Y (slaked lime or calcium hydroxide), is calcium hypochlorite. This compound is used as a disinfectant for drinking water. The chemical reaction is instrumental in public health, as it provides a means to sanitize water supplies and make them safe for consumption .

Water of crystallization refers to the water molecules that are incorporated into the crystalline structure of a compound, contributing to its stability and specific properties. A commercially important example is sodium carbonate decahydrate (Na₂CO₃·10H₂O), known as washing soda. It is obtained by crystallizing sodium carbonate from its aqueous solution. The presence of water of crystallization is crucial for the formation of crystals and their properties, such as solubility and hygroscopic nature .

The white color of the Sun observed at noon is due to light being least scattered. At noon, the Sun is directly overhead, so its light has to pass through a minimal atmosphere, resulting in less scattering of all colors equally. Therefore, all wavelengths of light reach the observer's eyes without significant deviation, maintaining the white appearance .

Myopia can be corrected using spectacles made from concave lenses. This defect is primarily due to the increased converging power of the eye lens, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of upon it. By using concave lenses, which spread out light before it enters the eye, the focal point is effectively pushed back onto the retina .

The feedback mechanism in the endocrine system operates to maintain homeostasis by regulating hormone levels. This involves a negative feedback loop where an increase in hormone levels leads to a decrease in its own production. For instance, the hypothalamus releases TRH, stimulating the pituitary to release TSH, which in turn stimulates the thyroid to produce thyroid hormones. An excessive amount of these thyroid hormones will signal the hypothalamus and pituitary to reduce TRH and TSH secretion, thus lowering thyroid hormone production .
