CASE BASED QUESTIONS
19. Read the following passage and answer the questions below:
The school auditorium was to be constructed to accommodate at least 1500 people. The
chairs are to be placed in concentric circular arrangement in such a way that each
succeeding circular row has 10 seats more than the previous one.

1) If the first circular row has 30 seats, how many seats will be there in the 10th row?
2) For 1500 seats in the auditorium, how many rows need to be there?
OR
If 1500 seats are to be arranged in the auditorium, how many seats are still left to be put
after 10th row?
3) If there were 17 rows in the auditorium, how many seats will be there in the middle
row?
20. India is competitive manufacturing location due to the low cost of manpower and strong
technical and engineering capabilities contributing to higher quality production runs. The
production of TV sets in a factory increases uniformly by a fixed number every year. It
produced 16000 sets in 6th year and 22600 sets in 9th year.

1) Find the production during first year.

OR
In which year, the production is 29,200 sets.
2) Find the production during 8th year.
3) Find the production during first 3 years.

To determine the common difference and the initial term, use the information given: a_10 = 52 and a_17 = a_13 + 20. The nth term of an AP is given by a_n = a + (n-1)d, where a is the first term and d is the common difference. For the 10th term: 52 = a + 9d. For the 13th term plus 20 equaling the 17th term: (a + 12d) + 20 = a + 16d. Solving these equations simultaneously yields the values of a and d.

The nth term of an arithmetic progression, a_n, when given the sum of the first n terms, S_n = 3n^2 - 4n, can be found using the formula: a_n = S_n - S_{n-1}. This requires finding S_n and S_{n-1} and computing the difference. Substitute n into the equation for S_n, then subtract S_{n-1} to find the nth term.

The sum of all terms in an AP with the first term a, second term b, and last term c can be derived by noting the relationship between these terms and the common difference. Based on the equation of nth term of an AP a_n = a + (n-1)d, and using the formula for the sum of n terms, S_n = n/2 * (first term + last term), the derived formula becomes (a+c)(b+c-2a)/2(b-a).

To calculate the number of seats in the middle row of concentric circular seating, identify each row as an arithmetic sequence. The first row with a count of 30 seats is incremented by 10 seats per successive row. Calculate the total number of terms, then find the middle row's sequence position, using (total rows + 1)/2 if the total is odd. The formula for the nth term is a_n = a + (n-1)d.

To determine the number of terms needed for the sum to be zero, identify the sequence's first term a = -6, and common difference d = (first term - previous term). Then, use the sum formula S_n = n/2 * (2a + (n-1)d) and set it equal to zero. Solve the resulting quadratic equation for n to find the number of terms required.
