Slide notes
Welcome to this module in the Start Here series. If you are not already familiar with basic video technology
such as SIP and H.323, it is highly recommended that you undertake the Introduction to Voice & Video
Technologies module prior to proceeding. If you find this module difficult to understand you can stop at any
point and your progress will be saved. To navigate this course, click on the arrows in the top left corner or
the TOC button in the bottom right corner to show or hide the Table of Contents.

Slide 3 - What’s It All About?
Slide notes
First, let's talk about what we mean when we talk about Polycom Video Endpoints. The term Video
Endpoints covers all the video-based products that Polycom sell, which are traditionally called endpoints.
These devices are in the form of a camera and microphone of some kind, plus the technology required to
take part in a video conference. This encompasses a wide range of solutions including immersive
telepresence solutions, which we call RealPresence Immersive, conference room solutions, which we call
RealPresence Room, desktop solutions, which we call RealPresence Desktop, and finally solutions for
smartphones and tablets, known as RealPresence Mobile.

Slide 4 - What’s It All About?
Slide notes
You will hear several terms when discussing audio and video and audio quality - we'll take a look at these
here. The majority of these were covered in the Introduction to Voice & Video Technologies course, so if
anything doesn't make sense, take a look at the transcript of that course for clarification.
HD Voice is a Polycom innovation which combines wideband, or Siren audio technology, with advanced
echo cancellation and noise reduction to provide the most realistic audio experience possible. It is a term
often found in conjunction with HD Video and HD Content. HD Video and HD Content just describes the
resolution the video is transmitted, but these three terms are often used to describe the 'whole package',
as it were. If you hear the term Ultimate HD, it refers to HD Voice, Video and Content.
Just as a quick recap, H.264 High Profile is a protocol used to compress video so that it requires less
bandwidth to transmit than standard H.264.
Constant Clarity is a group of Polycom technology innovations used together to provide the best possible
end-user experience.
Automatic Gain Control, or AGC, is a feature which automatically alters the gain (volume) for each
participant so that the sound at the far end is the same. So in a conference, you could be seated further
away from the conference phone but the far end would hear you at the same volume. This saves you from
shouting, and the other end from straining to hear!
Keyboard Noise Reduction is (unsurprisingly) a method of removing keyboard noise from the audio stream
so that someone with a desktop endpoint can operate their computer without everyone in a meeting
hearing the tapping sound

Listening to a musical instrument of any kind is a very different audio experience to listening to a voice
talking. Compressing audio to make it efficient to transmit across a network includes removing high and
low sounds that aren't usually heard. But in music it is really important that all the sounds are heard, and
it's also critical that the dynamics (the loud and quiet bits) are audible also. So Live Music Mode is an
option for the audio on hardware endpoints that changes the way the endpoint processes the audio so that
musical instruments sound as they should.
Lost Packet Recovery is a technology used to mask network issues as best possible to ensure a crisp and
natural video experience. Siren LPR is the version which applies to audio. This means that network
congestion and issues can be hidden to better ensure a great experience for the end-user.
StereoSurround is a feature that allows meeting participants to hear where the far end participants are
located in their room. If they are seen on the left of the room, they are heard on the left of the room; if they
are seen in the center, you hear them in the center; and of course if they are seated on the right, you hear
that they are on the right. This one feature is a huge part of the 'believableness' of a video conference - if
you don't hear things that match what you see, it's an extra effort for your brain to work out what's going
on, which is both distracting and tiring.
Finally, a word about provisioning. Provisioning is a process whereby an endpoint authenticates to and
then downloads settings from a management server. This can be used in any environment where
centralized control of variables can be useful, for example for the purposes of authenticating users to
ensure network security, to managing available network bandwidth by preventing users making high
definition calls.

Slide 5 - RealPresence Immersive
Slide notes
Let’s start with RealPresence Immersive solutions, seen here with the OTX on the left and RealPresence
Immersive Studio on the right. These are the solutions designed to be an immersive experience for the end
user, hence the name! These solutions can consist not just of the endpoints needed to make calls, but also
the rest of the rooms you see here as well; lighting, chairs, rear wall panels and desks, for example. These
rooms are fully functional multipurpose rooms that can be used for general meetings if video is not
required; content sharing can be achieved using the screens, and network connectivity is designed to be
available through data points built into the furniture. These rooms are suitable for anything from 1 to 21
seated people, as you can see here. As these solutions are available to accommodate different sized
rooms and numbers of participants, RealPresence Immersive solutions are complex to design and
position; it is recommended that an experienced Solution Architect or Sales Engineer assist with any
opportunity where RealPresence Immersive could be a good fit.

Slide 6 - RealPresence Room
Slide notes
At the heart of all RealPresence Immersive solutions is actually an endpoint which belongs to this family.
There are two series here, the HDX series, an example of which is seen here on the left. On the right is a
member of the RealPresence Group Series, the newest RealPresence Room solution. Each of these
series consists of a number of solutions designed for different environments, but they all share the same
focus, which is to maximize both ease of use and end-user experience for the best quality conferencing
possible. They can all be used either as a standalone SIP and H.323 endpoint, or alternatively as a fully
provisioned solution, including with Microsoft Lync integration, where the endpoint logs in just like an end-
user.

Slide 7 - RealPresence Packaged Solutions
Slide notes
The final part of the appliance style endpoints is the family of packaged solutions that use both HDX and
RealPresence Group Series endpoints to provide complete solutions for a variety of environments. This
means that all parts of the solution are included, such as monitors, stands, trolleys and so on. In the center
here you can see the RealPresence Group Media Center, which is available not only in a tabletop version,
but also in a wall mount and floor mount for single and dual screens. You can also see the utility cart on
the left, the education cart on the right and then a securely sealed unit designed for use in the judicial
system.

Slide 8 - RealPresence Desktop
Slide notes
RealPresence Desktop describes any endpoint product which is designed for personal or desktop use.
This includes the RealPresence Desktop product, seen here on the left, and the HDX 4000 series of
desktop endpoints, seen here on the right. The RealPresence Desktop product is available for Windows
and Mac operating systems and can be used either as a free to download standalone SIP and H.323
endpoint, or alternatively as a fully provisioned solution.
The HDX 4000 series is a desktop or small room endpoint (sometimes known as a huddle system because
you huddle around it). The user interface and capabilities are the same as that of the wider HDX family, but
have speakers and microphone built into the chassis for convenience, and are also able to support being
used as a laptop or PC monitor so you don't need an extra screen on your desk.

Slide 9 - RealPresence Mobile
Slide notes
RealPresence Mobile is the solution group for small but most pervasive devices. RealPresence Mobile is
the name of the free to download application available for Android and Apple smartphones and tablets.
Like RealPresence Desktop, RealPresence Mobile can be used as a standalone device or with a
provisioning server. Also included is a feature called SmartPairing, where the smartphone or tablet can be
paired (connected) to a room endpoint and used as the remote control when in a call.

Slide 11 - What's Next?
Slide notes
Now that you have completed this introduction to Polycom you are ready to progress onto all the streams
of training that follow regarding Polycom Voice, Polycom Video Endpoints and RealPresence Platform
solutions. These break down into three categories:
- Part I consists of a series of introductory modules detailing all the available solutions from Polycom, and
is applicable for sales and technical audiences
- Part II consists of sales positioning modules which follow on from the introduction modules in part I, and
are recommended for sales audiences
- Part III consists of a number of demo/simulation modules which show how Polycom solutions are used -
these are also applicable for any audience
