SCIENTIFIC AND ACADEMIC RESEARCH

Model of Hypothesis Driven Research

• Is there a story to tell?
Literature • What is the rationale for the project?
Review • What is the historical context of the work?
• Do I have a clear hypothesis?
• Do the experiments test that hypothesis?
• Is the experimental design defendable?
• Can I justify what I did?
• Do I use appropriate controls?
• How do my findings relate to the existing
knowledge?
Systematic literature review is required to:
•Assess the “state-of-art” in your discipline, subject area and topic
•Ensure information is obtained from reliable and reputed source i.e. a peer reviewed journal
•Based on “white spaces” in the domain, come up with an original research idea (hypothesis)- Gauge its
relevance to field. Are we just re-inventing the wheel?
•Ensure experiments chosen are feasible (negative data from literature)
•Ensure selected references are readily accessible, storeable and traceable in time for it to be properly
read, reviewed and used
THE PUBLISHING LANDSCAPE

Research leads the quest for knowledge, the need to

contemplate, explore, heal and create, and sparks the potential
for financial reward for innovative ideas.
• Advancement of Knowledge
• Recognition
• Prestige
• Primary vehicle for publication of research is the
scholarly, or scientific, or academic journal.
• Published by commercial publishers, associations and
societies, universities, and not-for-profit organizations.
• Published papers are peer-reviewed and meet the
editorial objectives of the journal.
• Scientists and scholars rely primarily on journal
literature to remain up-to-date in their fields of
interest.
CITATIONS – THE CORNER STONE OF LITERATURE REVIEW

• Within a published article authors are required to

create a list of References used to support their
own research.

• To include a reference to a book, journal article,

etc. in one’s list of references is to “cite” that
reference.

• A cite, or “citation” is an acknowledgment of

intellectual debt to a particular piece of research.

• Thus, to be “cited” is desirable as it is evidence

that one’s research was valuable to another
researcher. A highly cited article, receiving many
cites from other articles, is seen as influential

• Citations in science serve as linkages between

similar research items which leads to matching or
related scientific literature, such as journal articles,
conference proceedings, abstracts, etc.

•Web of Science has 115 million records and 1+ Billion citation links.
UNCOVERING THE RIGHT RESEARCH

• Getting a “lay-of-the land” –Research landscape- what has gone on

before?
• My idea-Is it there? Was it done before?
• If you are re-inventing the wheel- Funding difficulties!!!
• Changing terminology makes keyword searching difficult and accurate
• Keyword searching –slow moving process!
• Citation Indexing- The answer?
• Citation based searching captures naturally occurring relationships
between journal articles creating an entire searcheable “WEB OF
SCIENCE”
• Takes out the guesswork out of searching!

Citation Index - The Value Add

The language of research is constantly changing, as research progress concepts and

terminology evolve.
• Text based searching may miss critical information
• Network linkages through citations facilitate the discovery of information across the boundaries
of terminology

LAV
(Europe)

HTLV-III HIV + many variants, “SIV” ???

(USA)

1983 1987 Present Future

This particular article is highly cited

and relevant, but does not contain
the term “HIV”
Therefore, this record cannot be
found by searching for the text
“HIV” but is easily found by using
citations
EVOLUTION OF CITATION INDEXING

IMPACT FACTOR vs RANK IN CATEGORY
•The impact factor is just an absolute number calculated using a simple mathematical formula based on
the ratio of the number of citations of the journal’s articles on the number of total citable articles published
by that journal.
•One particular limitation is that certain fields are very specialized and may not receive that many citations.
Thus, an absolute number may not be the best metric to gauge the importance of that journal in a
particular field.
•On the other hand, JCR rankings in a category tell researchers the impact of the journal in that research
category.
•Each journal can have different ranks in different categories. Based on the target audience and focus
of the paper, researchers can decide in which journal to publish.
