Energy resources in Bangladesh
In Bangladesh, there aren’t many resources of oil and coal but
very large natural gas resources. Commercial energy
consumption comes mostly from natural gas, followed by oil,
hydropower, and coal.
There are also renewable sources of electricity which include
wind hydropower, solar power, biomass, and geothermal.
To produce or generate electricity there are turbines such as
wind and water turbine generator sets that convert mechanical
energy to electrical energy.
Power plants in Bangladesh
In Bangladesh, we have power stations. It is an industrial facility
for the generation of electric power. Power stations are
generally connected to an electric grid(or electricity network).
There are many power plants in Bangladesh.
Consisting of
▪ Nuclear power plant
▪ Coal-fired power plants
▪ Oil and Gas-fired Thermal power plants
▪ Gas turbines
▪ Gas engines
▪ Hydroelectric power plants
▪ Solar PV
▪ Combines cycle power plant
Let's talk about hydroelectric power plants in Bangladesh.
There is only one hydroelectric power/ hydropower station in
Bangladesh, which is the Karnaphuli power station.
The Karnaphuli power station is located at Kaptai, including the
Kaptai dam which is about 50km away from Chittagong’s port
city.
It is a Kaplan Turbine-based power plant in hydroelectric
facilities which is a type of hydro turbine that uses propellers to
create energy from flowing water. The installed capacity of the
power plant is 230MW.

It works as the penstock draws water from the reservoir and
injects it into the turbine blades, which results in turbine
rotation. The turbine shaft is coupled with an AC Generator
through a shaft. The scroll case with the turbine ensures
uniform water flow towards the turbine blades. The turbine-
discharged water follows (as can be seen as region-1) into the
draft tube and finally exits to the tailrace.
