Official Rapid Chess Tournament Rules
Players must not engage in actions that disrepute the game of chess and may not leave the playing venue without the arbiter's permission. The player whose move it is cannot leave the playing area without permission. Finished players become spectators. Annoying the opponent with unreasonable claims, draw offers, or noise is prohibited .
If no legal moves can be made from touched pieces, the player is allowed to make any other legal move with a different piece. This rule provides flexibility in situations where touched pieces cannot make a valid move .
Players are required to record their own moves and those of their opponent clearly and legibly in algebraic notation on the prescribed scoresheet, move-by-move. Writing moves in advance is prohibited, except when a player is claiming a draw. A player may reply to an opponent's move before recording it .
A chess game can be drawn in several situations: through stalemate, insufficient material to checkmate, threefold repetition of the same position, the fifty-move rule without pawn movement or capture, and mutual agreement between the players .
A player who wins their game or wins by forfeit receives one point. If a player loses the game or forfeits, they score no points. A draw awards both players half a point each .
Maintaining focus is crucial in chess to make accurate calculations and strategic decisions. Distractions, such as unreasonable claims, offers of draws, or introducing noise, are unethical as they give an unfair advantage and undermine the game's integrity .
Players must press the clock using the same hand they use to move a piece. They are only allowed to press the clock after making their move. If any clock issues arise, they should notify the arbiter, who may restart or replace the clock to resolve the issue .
If a player disobeys the tournament rules, the arbiter may impose penalties such as a fine, disqualification, or both. Ensuring adherence to the rules is the arbiter's responsibility, and they may resolve disputes and enforce regulations .
A player's choice of promotion piece is finalized when the piece is physically placed on the promotion square. This ends any further ability to change the promotion piece .
According to the tournament rules, if a player deliberately touches both their king and rook, they are required to castle legally if it is possible. However, if the rook is touched first, castling on that side for that move is not allowed. If it is an illegal castling move, the player must make a legal king move or any other legal move instead .
