Step 1 – Description
Professionals from Danone Canada's marketing, finance, and sales divisions participated in a
panel discussion and networking event for TRSM undergraduates. The purpose of the event was
to engage students by discussing important aspects of professional development and providing
advice on overcoming workplace challenges. Students had the opportunity to speak directly with
Danone staff members, gaining personal insights into the standards and career options available
in a large corporation. Danone representatives offered valuable guidance to students preparing to
enter the industry, including strategies for overcoming common workplace obstacles and
advancing in their careers. A key component of the event was the panel discussion, where
Danone specialists shared advice on navigating the job market, making wise career decisions,
and establishing professional relationships. After the panel, students participated in various
entertaining and interactive networking activities, such as trivia contests. These icebreaker
activities helped students form more comfortable connections with industry representatives.
Overall, the event was a worthwhile educational and networking opportunity that combined
practical guidance with engaging activities, giving students deep connections and an
understanding of the skills and mindset required for success in a competitive environment.
Step 2 – Feelings
I had mixed feelings of excitement and anxiety before the event. I was a little nervous about
networking in such a setting, but I was also excited to connect with recruiters and learn from
Danone professionals. I wanted to make a positive impression and was curious about how the
day would unfold. During the event, I felt engaged, especially during the panel discussions,
where I heard practical insights from various fields. Playing the trivia games helped me relax,
making it easier to talk to people and ask questions. I found the advice inspiring, which boosted
my confidence throughout the event. I left feeling satisfied and more prepared for my future
career. At the event, I practiced active listening by paying close attention to each speaker’s
stories and challenges, which helped me build empathy. By listening carefully, I connected better
with the Danone professionals and understood their perspectives and career paths. This made it
easier to relate to their experiences and appreciate the work they do, helping me feel more
connected throughout the event.
Step 3 – Evaluation
The event had many great aspects. Hearing directly from Danone experts in sales, marketing, and
finance during the panel discussion was very helpful, as it provided a good overview of different
career options. The interactive trivia games were also a fun addition, creating a relaxed
atmosphere that made it easier to approach other students and recruiters. The Danone team was
friendly and open to answering questions, which made networking feel enjoyable and easy. The
advice they shared on handling early career challenges and navigating the job market was both
motivating and useful. One area that could be improved is the time allocated for networking.
With so many students wanting to connect, it was difficult to have deep conversations with every
professional. Adding more structured networking sessions or smaller breakout groups could
allow for more meaningful connections. Overall, the event was well-organized and impactful,
with just a few small areas for improvement.
Step 4 – Analysis
The event was a really good experience for several key reasons. I gained a lot from the
well-planned format, which included a panel discussion and networking opportunities. By
listening to Danone experts discuss their roles in sales, marketing, and finance, I learned about
various career paths and the challenges within each profession. This was incredibly helpful as it
made me think about the skills needed and where I might fit into those areas. Additionally, the
quiz games made the event more relaxed, making it easier to approach people and strike up
conversations. Preparation was another significant factor. I arrived with specific goals, such as
improving my understanding of Danone's industry and learning how to tackle job-related
challenges. This focus allowed me to concentrate on particular questions during the panel and
networking sessions. I engaged actively by following up with inquiries and taking notes on the
useful career advice given. This kind of preparation helped me get more out of the event,
allowing me to connect meaningfully with other students and professionals. However, the limited
time for one-on-one networking was a challenge. With many students eager to talk to Danone
representatives, it was difficult to have in-depth discussions with everyone I wanted to meet. I
tried to make the most of my time by asking targeted questions that were important to me, even
though this was beyond my control. I noticed that other students faced similar challenges, but
they also seemed to value the opportunity to interact with industry professionals. This experience
helped me practice active listening by focusing on each speaker's insights and asking thoughtful
follow-up questions. Listening carefully allowed me to connect with their experiences and
challenges, building empathy and understanding. By staying engaged, I gained a deeper
perspective on their roles and career paths.
Step 5 – Conclusion
My networking confidence, flexibility, and active listening all improved as a result of this
encounter. Asking follow-up questions and paying close attention helped me develop empathy,
which is a skill I'll use to connect with people. I learned flexibility from having limited time for
networking; I concentrated on asking the right questions to maximize each conversation. To
interact even more effectively in business settings, I'll continue to prepare more targeted
questions for deeper insights and focus on broadening my understanding of marketing and sales.
Step 6 – Action Plan
I intend to increase my knowledge and abilities in several ways. To improve my ability to
interact with people at networking events, I will first search for online workshops or classes that
teach active listening and empathy. To get experience interacting with experts, I also want to go
to more industry-related networking events—at least one a month, ideally. I'll examine case
studies, trade publications, and company blogs to gain additional knowledge about sales and
marketing. To better comprehend their experiences, I intend to network and seek out mentors in
these sectors.
