1. PLANNING INFORMATION
A. Effectivity
(1) Aircraft: 787-8/-9/-10
(2) Engine: TRENT 1000
(3) Component: Fan Cowl PDOS Actuator
(4) Part Numbers: All fan cowl PDOS actuators with part number 725Z3191-31
B. Concurrent Requirements
None.
C. Reason
(1) Objective:
To provide the opportunity to install an end cap over the fan cowl PDOS actuator rod end to further
restrict the direct path for water to enter the actuator.
(2) Problem:
The fan cowl power door opening system (PDOS) actuator may experience water ingress damage
preventing the actuator from cycling correctly. Water freezing and expanding inside the actuator
damages the piston restricting the ability to open and/or close the fan cowl.
(3) Cause:
The root cause is water ingress into the fan cowl PDOS actuator. The water ingress path is via
the fan cowl hinge line/thumbnail fairing, and/or through the hoist plug hole in the fan cowl PDOS
mounting bracket when the hoist plug is missing, reference Figure 1 and Figure 2. The trapped
water freezes in the piston rod. The ice expands and produces enough force to damage the piston.
(4) Background:
In-service returns of 725Z3191-31 fan cowl actuators have been found with damage to the piston
rod. This is due to water ingress in the actuators from sources such as, but not limited to,
condensation, rain, washing and de-icing.
(5) Substantiation:
Fan cowl PDOS actuator end cap validated by engineering analysis.
D. Description
This Service Bulletin provides instructions to drain the actuator of any accumulated water, install the
end cap, and secure the end cap with a strap, adhesive, and sealant. The rework provided within the
Service Bulletin can be performed by the operator or at Collins Actuation & Propeller Systems (APS).

The repairs and modifications herein were determined to be minor per 14 Code of Federal Regulations
(CFR) 21.93/CS21.93 and comply with the applicable regulations and are on record with Boeing as
FAA-approved, as well as EASA/JAA approved by process via 14 CFR 21.95/CS 21.95.

3. ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS
A. GENERAL NOTES
1) Paragraphs identified by a letter give general work instructions and necessary tests. Instructions
identified with numbers on figures give the recommended sequence of steps.
2) Obey all warnings and cautions given in the specified manual sections.
3) Store materials, prepare surfaces, and mix, apply, and cure materials in accordance with
Manufacturer’s requirement unless stated otherwise in this document.
4) All references to LEFT HAND or RIGHT HAND are made from the orientation of aft facing forward.
5) The following instructions are used to accomplish inspection and rework at both engine 1 and
engine 2 positions.
