What is It

Definition of Terms

Customer - is an individual or business that purchases another

company's goods or services.
- Any person or entity which is a rival against another. In
Competitor/s business, a company in the same industry or a similar
industry which offers a similar product or service.
Wants - a desire, demand that shows wealth and an expensive way
of living; it always wanting something new.
Innovation -
improving the product or enhancing it.
Invention -
introducing an entirely new product to replace the old one.

Services - Activities that other people or business do for you.

Goods - Are tangible things that are produced, bought, or sold, then
finally consumed.
Product - is anything that can be offered to a market that might
satisfy a want or need.

The simple fact that different types of goods are bought at different times
and for various reasons.

There are three types of goods in today’s market are:

1. Convenience goods
- Convenience goods are goods that those customer purchase without
putting thought into the decision to buy them because the customer
already has all the information they need on the product before they go
out to buy it.
Convenience goods are usually products that consumers used on a daily
basis such as milk, bread, coffee, rice and etc. The customer already
knows what they want, and they are really not for the idea to shop
around, they are usually willing to take what is available.

7
Convenience can further be grouped into three categories;
 Staples goods which are goods that are available at low prices and are
bought on a regular basis and they include rice, milk and detergent and
soaps.
 Impulse goods which are goods that the customer had no intention to
buy as they walked into the store but still ended up buying them and
they included ice-cream and candy.
 Emergency goods which are goods that are bought as a result of a very
urgent need. Examples include a raincoat or an umbrella when it
suddenly begins to rain.

2. Shopping goods
- These are goods that the customer has no adequate information about.
They are required first to get a source for information on the features of
the product and its alternatives before they go out and buy it. These are
not goods that are bought on a regular basis. They are bought
occasionally, and they usually cost a lot of money which most likely needs
a great amount of research before buying them.

Shopping goods are further classified into:

 Attribute-based shopping goods – These are goods that the consumer

first gets information about then proceeds to evaluate its options,
performance, warranty, product features and other such factors. The
product that will offer the best blend of attributes is the one that will be
bought. Examples of products that are marketed as attribute-based
shopping goods are Calvin Klein Clothes and Sony Electronics.
 Price-based Shopping Goods – with these goods, consumers come to the
conclusion that all product attributes are the same, and they look
around to get the least expensive option.

8
3. Specialty goods
- Specialty goods usually come with a lot of brand loyalty. These are goods to
which customers are loyal to a certain brand. The customers have all the
information that they need on the product and all its features before they go
out to buy it. They are willing to put in all the effort and money required to
get them the product. They are even willing to pay a higher price than they
would for an alternative product if they have to. Their loyalty never wavers.
With these goods, it is either their brand of choice or no brand at all.
Substitutes are never options for consumers.

Different types of services available in the market and these include:

 Rented-Goods Services
- Rented goods are a property of someone else that are leased out to a
customer for a certain period of time. The leasee does not get full
ownership of the product. They only get to use it for a certain time period,
for which they are charged a certain amount of money, after which they
return the good back to its original owner. This is a very beneficial to use
when you are looking for a product that you conveniently use for the
short-term or if there is a product that you have urgent need of but you
really do not have the money to buy it.
- Examples of goods that can be rented out include cars, tuxedos, hotel
rooms and apartments.

 Owned-Goods Services
- These are services that are rendered to owners of various goods. They
typically involve the repair or alteration of a good that is owned by a
customer. The good is only given to the second party to be made better
after which it is returned to the owner. In these situations, it is the owner
who pays for the services and not the person being given the good like in
the case of the rentals. The services are usually offered by people who are
skilled in different areas of craft at a fee.
- These services include dry cleaning, haircuts, car wash, lawn care,
plumbing, watch repair, automobile repair just to mention but a few.

9
 Non-Goods
- These are services that do not involve the movement of any goods from
one party to another. They are normally quite expensive and the bill is
footed by the consumer. They are also offered by experts in the field and
the products being offered here are mostly intellectual. Remember that
no tangible goods are actually moved.
- Such services include: legal, medical, counseling, accounting and
consulting services.

Characteristics of Services

- Services are generally much harder to select owing to the fact that they
are intangible in nature. One can never really be sure of what they are
getting until they have received the services
- Most of the time, it is simply impossible to set apart the service from the
person offering it. This is simply because it is the person who is doing the
actual work thus without them no service will be provided.
- Services are actually highly perishable which makes it impossible for one
to store them which in turn increases the risk of loss where they are
concerned.
- The quality of service varies. Depending on the resources, training,
experience and knowledge that they have, different service providers will
offer different quality of service.

What are Products and Services?

A product is a tangible item that is put on the market for acquisition,

attention, or consumption, while a service is an intangible item, which arises from
the output of one or more individuals. Although it seems like the main distinction
between the two concepts is founded on their tangibility that is not always the case.
In most cases services are intangible, but products are not always tangible.

Tangible vs. Intangible

Evaluating the quality of a tangible product is very easy. Since most

products are countable, touchable, and visible, a consumer can measure its
stability by inspecting it. A good case in point is when an individual is buying a

10
home. The buyer will check every corner of the house, including the foundation,
each individual room, and more.

In contrast, a service is not something that one can feel or try out before
paying for it. Say an individual needs a professional inspector to identify any
hidden issues before deciding to purchase a home. Just how experienced is the
inspector with regard to plumbing, roofing, and other structural matters?

Perishable vs. Imperishable

The best way to illustrate perishable products is to consider a restaurant

owner. If such an individual does not understand the concept of spoilage and waste
reduction, he risks ruining his business since fresh foods spoil within a few days.
Another example is technology. Even some intangible products like software become
obsolete at some point. Imperishable products include items like jewelry and
automobile parts.

Services can be described as perishable but not imperishable. A perishable

service simply means that it’s short-term. Preferably, such a service is consumed
as soon as it is produced. Unlike products, the service cannot be stored for later
use.

Examples of perishable services are airline flights, auto repair, theater

entertainment, and manicures. If an individual purchases an air ticket for a
particular day, and then he suffers a cold and is not able to travel, the ticket
expires. The perishable attribute of some services makes it hard to balance supply
and demand.

Products are simply objects that are manufactured, stored, transported,

advertised, and then sold to consumers. While products can either be tangible or
intangible, services are intangible. The differences between products and services
are based on different factors, including tangibility, perishability, variability, and
heterogeneity.

Needs and Wants of People

 Needs – essential things that people cannot do without in a society

and in business.
 Wants – desires, demand and extravagance that shows wealth and an
expensive way of living; it always wanting something new.

11
Everyone has his or her own needs and wants. However, people have
different concepts of needs and wants. Needs in business are important things that
every individual cannot do without in a society. These include:

1. Basic commodities for consumption

2. Clothing and other personal belongings,
3. Shelter, sanitation and health
4. Education and relaxation

Wants - are desires, demand and extravagance that shows wealth and an expensive
way of living; it always wanting something new.

Some examples of every individual which are non-basic needs like; fashion
accessories, shoes, clothes, travelling around the world, eating in an exclusive
restaurant; watching movies, concerts, plays, having luxurious cars, wearing
expensive jewelry, perfume, living in impressive homes, and others.

Needs and wants of people are the basic indicators of the kind of business that
you may engage into because it can serve as the measure of your success. Some
other good points that you might contemplate in business undertakings are the
kind of people, their needs, wants, lifestyle, culture and tradition, and social
orientation that they belong.

Environmental scanning – is a process that that systematically surveys and

interprets relevant data to identify external opportunities and threats.
