What is

Design Thinking?
Design thinking is a problem-solving approach that
involves empathizing with users, defining the problem,
ideating potential solutions, prototyping, and testing.

It is often used in product and service design, but can

also be applied to other fields such as business,
healthcare, and education.

Design thinking is known for its ability to generate

innovative solutions, by taking a user-centered approach
and focusing on understanding the needs of the users.
The design thinking process typically includes
these 5 steps:

Empathize Define Ideate Prototype Test

Empathize is the first step in the design thinking
process and it involves understanding the user
and their needs through research, observation,
and interaction.

The goal of this step is to gain a deep

understanding of the user's perspective, their
goals, their pain points, and the context in which
they will be using the product or service. This step
is also known as user research.
Define is the second step in the design thinking
process. It involves defining the problem or
opportunity based on the insights gained during
the empathize step.

The goal of this step is to identify the key problem

or opportunity that the design team will focus on
solving. This step is also known as problem
definition or opportunity identification.
Ideate is the third step in the design thinking
process. It involves generating a wide range of
ideas and potential solutions to the problem or
opportunity that was defined in the previous step.

The goal of this step is to come up with as many

potential solutions as possible, without worrying
about whether they are practical or feasible. This
step is also known as idea generation or
brainstorming.
Prototype is the fourth step in the design thinking
process. It involves creating a physical or digital
representation of one or more of the ideas
generated in the previous step.

The goal of this step is to create a tangible

representation of the solution that can be tested
and evaluated with users. This step is also known
as prototyping or mock-up.
Test is the fifth and final step in the design thinking
process. It involves evaluating the prototype with
users to gather feedback and insights.

The goal of this step is to gather data on the

usability, effectiveness, and feasibility of the
prototype and to use that data to improve the
design. This step is also known as usability testing,
user testing or evaluation.
Design thinking is an iterative process, meaning
that each step should be repeated as many times
as necessary to achieve a successful outcome.

It emphasizes on rapid prototyping and testing, in

order to quickly identify and address any issues
that arise during the design process.
