v(−2) = 1 11 

v(0) = 2 7 

v(5) = 3 −3 

Exercise 11

Let c(t) be the number of customers in a restaurant t hours after

8 A.M. Match each statement with its meaning.

1 There are no
customers in
c(0) = 0 
the restaurant
at 8 A.M.

2 There are the

same number
of customers in
c(3) = c(8) the restaurant 
at 11 A.M. as
there are at 4
P.M.

3 There are 29
customers in
c(n) = 29 the restaurant 
n hours after 8
A.M.

4 There are fewer

customers in
the restaurant
c(13) < c(12) 
at 9 P.M. than
there are at 8
P.M.

 There are no customers in the restaurant at midnight.

There are n customers in the restaurant 29 hours after 8
A.M.

There are fewer customers in the restaurant at 1:00 P.M.
than there are at noon.

There are the same number of customers in the
restaurant at 3 A.M. as there are at 8 A.M.

Exercise 13

Find the value of x so that the function has the given value.

h(x) = −7x; h(x) = 63

x= 1 −9 

Exercise 15

Find the value of x so that the function has the given value.

m(x) = 4x + 15; m(x) = 7

x= 1 −2 

Exercise 17

Find the value of x so that the function has the given value.

1
q(x) = 2
x − 3; q(x) = −4

x= 1 −2 

Exercise 19

Find the value of x so that f (x) = 7.

x= 1 5 

Exercise 21

The function C(x) = 17.5x − 10 represents the cost (in dollars)

of buying x tickets to the orchestra with a $10 coupon.

a. How much does it cost to buy 5 tickets?

It costs $ 1 77.5  to buy 5 tickets.

b. How many tickets can you buy with $130?

You can buy 2 8  tickets.

Exercise 29

The graph shows the percent p (in decimal form) of battery power
remaining in a laptop computer after t hours of use. A tablet
computer initially has 75% of its battery power remaining and
loses 12.5% per hour. Which computer’s battery will last longer?
Explain.

the tablet computer; The graph of the tablet computer

has a slope of −0.125 , which is less steep than
−0.20, the slope of the graph of the laptop computer.

the tablet computer; The graph of the tablet computer

shows that when p(t) = 0 , t is 6, which is greater 
than 5.

computer has a slope of −0.20, which is steeper
than −0.125 , the slope of the graph of the tablet
computer.

computer shows that when p(t) = 0 , t is 5, which is
less than 6.

Exercise 30

The function C(x) = 25x + 50 represents the labor cost (in
