Airbus A320 Simulator Training Guide
Introduction
The Airbus A320 Simulator Training Guide is provided to familiarize you with the maneuvers,
procedures, and tasks that you will be required to complete during each of your simulator
training lessons. This guide is also designed to provide context to various QRH checklist items,
such as “AS REQUIRED” actions. It is expected that as you progress though the course your
reliance on this guide will be reduced, and use of the QRH will become the primary source of
reference for checklist completion. Finally, since this may be your first experience in a
professional pilot training program that utilizes full-motion flight simulators, this guide also
serves to provide you with some general operating practices.
• Fly the simulator as you would a real aircraft, including proper response to ATC
communications/instructions, TCAS advisories and resolutions, GPWS warnings, weather
conditions, etc.
• Use of aircraft automation (autothrust, autopilot, etc.) is allowed unless otherwise directed by
your instructor. If the system is operable, you are allowed to use it.
• Certain techniques will be introduced by our instructors to assist you with accomplishing the
specified manufacturer procedures while completing various required operational tasks.
Techniques should not be confused with manufacturer procedures. Techniques are used
simply to assist the pilot with the completion of the specified manufacturer procedures.
Should any confusion arise on how to accomplish a procedure please utilize this guide, and
the written aircraft profiles, as your primary source of reference.
• The first simulator lesson assumes a first flight of the day aircraft state. All subsequent
simulator lessons and the practical test assume a through-flight transit stop. Checklist items
marked by asterisks (*) are the only steps to be completed during a through-flight transit stop.
• Simulator visual and/or motion systems may induce vertigo and motion sickness. If you start
to become ill at any time, please advise your instructor immediately.
NOTE: Should a conflict or difference between the QRH and this guide be noted, the procedures in this guide shall take priority.
The content of this guide is furnished for informational use only and is subject to change without notice. ATP JETS assumes no
responsibility or liability for any errors or inaccuracies that may appear. This publication does not replace the aircraft flight manual or
FAA-approved checklists and procedures. No part of this publication may be reproduced, stored in a retrieval system, or transmitted in

CAPTAIN FIRST OFFICER
*TAKEOFF BRIEFING… ..................................... PERFORM
The decision to reject the takeoff may be taken at the Captain’s discretion, depending on the circumstances.
The Captain should seriously consider discontinuing the takeoff if any ECAM warning / caution is activated.
“Prior to 100 knots I will evaluate and determine the need to reject or continue the takeoff”
ABNORMAL PROCEDURES
AT AND ABOVE 100 KTS BUT PRIOR TO V1
Rejecting the takeoff at these speeds is a more serious matter, particularly on contaminated runways.
Above 100 kts exceeding EGT red line or nose gear vibration should not result in the decision to reject
At these speeds the Captain should be “go‐minded” and very few situations should lead to the decision to
reject the takeoff:
• Fire warning or severe damage
• Sudden loss of engine thrust
• Malfunctions or conditions that give unambiguous indications that the aircraft will not fly safely
• Any red ECAM warning
• Any amber ECAM caution listed below:
o F/CTL SIDESTICK FAULT
o ENG FAIL
o ENG REVERSER FAULT
o ENG REVERSE UNLOCKED
• In the case of tire failure between V1 minus 20 kts and V1:
o Unless debris from the tires has caused serious engine anomalies, it is far better to get airborne,
reduce the fuel load, and land with a full runway length available.
“After 100 KTS, I will announce STOP only for serious problems, bring the aircraft to a stop, set the parking
brake, and call “FLIGHT ATTENDANT STATIONS” analyze the situation and perform ECAM or EVACUATION
checklist or clear the runway as appropriate.”
ABNORMAL PROCEDURES
AT AND ABOVE V1
Takeoff must be continued because it may not be possible to stop the aircraft on the remaining runway
“After V1 we will continue the takeoff with NO ACTIONS except gear up, application of rudder trim, and AP ON.
Reaching engine out acceleration altitude we will level off and accelerate to Green Dot Speed while initiating flap
retraction in accordance with the flap retraction schedule. Reaching Green Dot Speed we will continue the climb by
selecting OPEN CLIMB and Green Dot Speed. We will then reduce thrust to MCT. Once established in the climb the PF
will then call for ECAM Actions. We will accomplish the ECAM Action as a crew and then request radar vectors back for
an approach. Do you have any questions?”

Pilots must become situationally aware before they are able to take appropriate actions
An overview of actions to recover from an Unusual Attitude encompass three basic activities:
• Assess the energy state trend (become situationally aware)
• Arrest the flight path divergence
• Recover to a stabilized flight path

• The Approach Briefing should be concise and performed in a logical flow
• The approach briefing should not simply be read from the approach chart
APPROACH BRIEFING – PF
PRECISION OR NON‐PRECISION
Before commencing an instrument approach, several factors must be considered by the crew. The
following points should be emphasized during an approach briefing:
• Airport facilities
• Weather minima
• Task sharing
• Callouts
• Go‐around strategy
CIRCLING APPROACH
Flight crew should perform the Approach Briefing with additional items specific to the circling procedure:
• Circling minima as published on the Approach chart
• Direction of circling, if restricted according to the Approach chart, e.g. due to terrain.
• Significant obstacles in the airport vicinity
• Technique to be used (e.g. AP and A/THR, FPV) and configuration
• Go‐around strategy – action in the case of loss of visual references.

HOLDING

HOLDING SPEED AND CONFIGURATION
If a hold is to be flown, provided NAV mode is engaged and the speed is managed, an automatic speed reduction will occur to achieve
the Maximum Endurance speed when entering the holding pattern. The Maximum Endurance speed is approximately equal to Green
Dot and provides the lowest hourly fuel consumption.
If the Maximum Endurance speed is greater than the ICAO or state maximum holding speed, the crew should select flap 1 below
20,000 ft and fly S Speed. Fuel consumption will be increased when holding in anything other than a clean configuration and
Maximum Endurance speed. The exact predicted holding speed is displayed on the MCDU once the hold is inserted; however, use
caution as U.S. maximum holding speeds are not considered.
The holding pattern is not included in the descent path computation since the FMGS does not know how many patterns will be flown. When
the holding fix is sequenced, the FMGS assumes that only one holding pattern will be flown and updates predictions accordingly. Once in the
holding pattern, the VDEV indicates the vertical deviation between the current aircraft altitude and the altitude at which the aircraft should
cross the exit fix to be on the descent profile.
The DES mode guides the aircraft down at ‐1,000 ft/min whilst in the holding pattern until reaching the cleared altitude or altitude constraint.
When in the holding pattern, LAST EXIT UTC/FUEL information is displayed on the MCDU HOLD page. These predictions are based upon the
fuel policy requirements specified on the MCDU FUEL PRED page with no extra fuel, assuming the aircraft will divert. The crew should be
aware that this information is computed with defined assumptions e.g.:
• Aircraft weight being equal to landing weight at the primary destination.
• Flight at FL 220 if the distance to ALTN is less than 200 nm; otherwise, FL 310 is performed at maximum range speed.
• Constraint wind (as entered in the alternate field of the DES WIND page).

When the SEC F‐PLN is activated, the Go Around procedure in the FMS is associated with the landing runway and not with the
instrument approach runway. Therefore, if visual references are lost during the circling approach, the flight crew should fly the
Go Around procedure using selected guidance following the pre‐briefed missed approach procedures.
The pre‐briefed missed approach procedure is to request, in advance, to fly heading 180° (overfly the intended landing runway).

INTRODUCTION TO EMERGENCY EVACUATION
GENERAL
The typical case that may require an emergency evacuation is an uncontrollable on‐the‐ground engine fire.
This situation, which may occur following a rejected takeoff or after landing, requires good crew coordination to
cope with a high workload situation.
• In the rejected takeoff case, the Captain calls “STOP”. This confirms that the Captain has controls.
• In all other cases, the Captain calls “I HAVE CONTROLS” if required, to state the control handover.
DECISION MAKING
As soon as aircraft is stopped and the parking brake is set the Captain notifies the cabin crew and calls for ECAM ACTIONS.
If the fire remains out of control after having discharged the fire agents, the Captain calls for the
EMERGENCY EVACUATION procedure on page 74 (and on the inside back cover of the QRH)
