Answers - Algebra 2 Course - Unit 4 – Worksheet 4 - Special Products of Binomials,
Part 2

1. Multiply.

(7𝑥 + 2)(7𝑥 − 2)

Multiply using the special product rule for the product of a sum and a difference,
which is:

(𝑎 + 𝑏)(𝑎 − 𝑏) = 𝑎2 − 𝑏 2

In the product (7𝑥 + 2)(7𝑥 − 2) , 𝑎 = 7𝑥 and 𝑏 = 2. Therefore, the rule gives us:

(7𝑥 + 2)(7𝑥 − 2) = (7𝑥)2 − (2)2

= 49𝑥 2 − 4

Answer: 49𝑥 2 − 4

2. Multiply.

(𝑥 2 + 5)(𝑥 2 − 5)

Multiply using the special product rule for the product of a sum and a difference,
which is:

(𝑎 + 𝑏)(𝑎 − 𝑏) = 𝑎2 − 𝑏 2

In the product (𝑥 2 + 5)(𝑥 2 − 5) , 𝑎 = 𝑥 2 and 𝑏 = 5. Therefore, the rule gives us:

(𝑥 2 + 5)(𝑥 2 − 5) = (𝑥 2 )2 − (5)2

= 𝑥 4 − 25

Answer: 𝑥 4 − 25

3. Multiply.

3𝑥𝑦(2𝑥 + 𝑦)2

First, multiply using the special product rule for the square of a binomial of a sum,
which is:

(𝑎 + 𝑏)2 = 𝑎2 + 2𝑎𝑏 + 𝑏 2

In the product (2𝑥 + 𝑦)2 , 𝑎 = 2𝑥 and 𝑏 = 𝑦. Therefore, the rule gives us:

(2𝑥 + 𝑦)2 = (2𝑥)2 + 2(2𝑥)(𝑦) + (𝑦)2

= 4𝑥 2 + 4𝑥𝑦 + 𝑦 2

Next, multiply the above answer by 3𝑥𝑦:

3𝑥𝑦(4𝑥 2 + 4𝑥𝑦 + 𝑦 2 ) = 12𝑥 3 𝑦 + 12𝑥 2 𝑦 2 + 3𝑥𝑦 3

Answer: 12𝑥 3 𝑦 + 12𝑥 2 𝑦 2 + 3𝑥𝑦 3

4. Multiply.

(𝑧 𝑚 − 3)2

Multiply using the special product rule for the square of a binomial of a
difference, which is:

(𝑎 − 𝑏)2 = 𝑎2 − 2𝑎𝑏 + 𝑏 2

In the product (𝑧 𝑚 − 3)2 , 𝑎 = 𝑧 𝑚 and 𝑏 = 3. Therefore, the rule gives us:

(𝑧 𝑚 − 3)2 = (𝑧 𝑚 )2 − 2(𝑧 𝑚 )(3) + (3)2

= 𝑧 2𝑚 − 6𝑧 𝑚 + 9

Answer: 𝑧 2𝑚 − 6𝑧 𝑚 + 9

5. Multiply.

(2𝑢 + 3𝑣)(𝑥 − 𝑦)(2𝑢 − 3𝑣)(𝑥 + 𝑦)

Rearrange the groups first:

(2𝑢 + 3𝑣)(𝑥 − 𝑦)(2𝑢 − 3𝑣)(𝑥 + 𝑦) = (2𝑢 + 3𝑣)(2𝑢 − 3𝑣)(𝑥 − 𝑦)(𝑥 + 𝑦)

Multiply using the special product rule for the product of a sum and a difference,
which is:

(𝑎 + 𝑏)(𝑎 − 𝑏) = 𝑎2 − 𝑏 2

In the product (2𝑢 + 3𝑣)(2𝑢 − 3𝑣) , 𝑎 = 2𝑢 and 𝑏 = 3𝑣. Therefore, the rule
gives us:

(2𝑢 + 3𝑣)(2𝑢 − 3𝑣) = (2𝑢)2 − (3𝑣)2

= 4𝑢2 − 9𝑣 2

In the product (𝑥 − 𝑦)(𝑥 + 𝑦) , 𝑎 = 𝑥 and 𝑏 = 𝑦. Therefore, the rule gives us:

(𝑥 − 𝑦)(𝑥 + 𝑦) = (𝑥)2 − (𝑦)2

= 𝑥2 − 𝑦2

Next, multiply the two products above using distribution:

(4𝑢2 − 9𝑣 2 )(𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 ) = 4𝑢2 (𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 ) − 9𝑣 2 (𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 )

= 4𝑢2 𝑥 2 − 4𝑢2 𝑦 2 − 9𝑣 2 𝑥 2 + 9𝑣 2 𝑦 2

Answer: 4𝑢2 𝑥 2 − 4𝑢2 𝑦 2 − 9𝑣 2 𝑥 2 + 9𝑣 2 𝑦 2

6. Multiply.

(2𝑥 − 7)(7 + 2𝑥)

Rearrange the second parenthesis:

(2𝑥 − 7)(7 + 2𝑥) = (2𝑥 − 7)(2𝑥 + 7)

Next, multiply using the special product rule for the product of a sum and a
difference, which is:
(𝑎 + 𝑏)(𝑎 − 𝑏) = 𝑎2 − 𝑏 2

In the product (2𝑥 − 7)(2𝑥 + 7) , 𝑎 = 2𝑥 and 𝑏 = 7. Therefore, the rule gives us:
(2𝑥 − 7)(2𝑥 + 7) = (2𝑥)2 − (7)2

= 4𝑥 2 − 49

Answer: 4𝑥 2 − 49

7. Multiply.

(𝑥 2 − 6)(𝑥 2 + 6)

Multiply using the special product rule for the product of a sum and a difference,
which is:

(𝑎 + 𝑏)(𝑎 − 𝑏) = 𝑎2 − 𝑏 2

In the product (𝑥 2 − 6)(𝑥 2 + 6) , 𝑎 = 𝑥 2 and 𝑏 = 6. Therefore, the rule gives us:

(𝑥 2 − 6)(𝑥 2 + 6) = (𝑥 2 )2 − (6)2

= 𝑥 4 − 36

Answer: 𝑥 4 − 36

8. Multiply.
3𝑦(𝑥 − 5𝑦)2

First, multiply using the special product rule for the square of a binomial of a
difference, which is:

(𝑎 − 𝑏)2 = 𝑎2 − 2𝑎𝑏 + 𝑏 2

In the product (𝑥 − 5𝑦)2 , 𝑎 = 𝑥 and 𝑏 = 5𝑦. Therefore, the rule gives us:

(𝑥 − 5𝑦)2 = (𝑥)2 − 2(𝑥)(5𝑦) + (5𝑦)2

= 𝑥 2 − 10𝑥𝑦 + 25𝑦 2

Next, multiply the answer above by 3𝑦:

3𝑦(𝑥 2 − 10𝑥𝑦 + 25𝑦 2 ) = 3𝑥 2 𝑦 − 30𝑥𝑦 2 + 75𝑦 3

Answer: 3𝑥 2 𝑦 − 30𝑥𝑦 2 + 75𝑦 3

9. Multiply.
4𝑥(2𝑥 − 𝑦)2
First, multiply using the special product rule for the square of a binomial of a
difference, which is:

(𝑎 − 𝑏)2 = 𝑎2 − 2𝑎𝑏 + 𝑏 2

In the product (2𝑥 − 𝑦)2 , 𝑎 = 2𝑥 and 𝑏 = 𝑦. Therefore, the rule gives us:

(2𝑥 − 𝑦)2 = (2𝑥)2 − 2(2𝑥)(𝑦) + (𝑦)2

= 4𝑥 2 − 4𝑥𝑦 + 𝑦 2

Next, multiply the answer above by 4𝑥:

4𝑥(4𝑥 2 − 4𝑥𝑦 + 𝑦 2 ) = 16𝑥 3 − 16𝑥 2 𝑦 + 4𝑥𝑦 2

Answer: 16𝑥 3 − 16𝑥 2 𝑦 + 4𝑥𝑦 2

5(3𝑥 + 2)(3𝑥 − 2)

First, multiply using the special product rule for the product of a sum and a
difference, which is:

(𝑎 + 𝑏)(𝑎 − 𝑏) = 𝑎2 − 𝑏 2

In the product (3𝑥 + 2)(3𝑥 − 2) , 𝑎 = 3𝑥 and 𝑏 = 2. Therefore, the rule gives us:

(3𝑥 + 2)(3𝑥 − 2) = (3𝑥)2 − (2)2

= 9𝑥 2 − 4

Next, multiply the answer above by 5:

5(9𝑥 2 − 4) = 45𝑥 2 − 20

Answer: 45𝑥 2 − 20
