The Supplemental Restraint System such as “AIR BAG” and “SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER”, used along C
with a front seat belt, helps to reduce the risk or severity of injury to the driver and front passenger for certain
types of collision. Information necessary to service the system safely is included in the SR and SB section of
this Service Manual.
WARNING: D
• To avoid rendering the SRS inoperative, which could increase the risk of personal injury or death in
the event of a collision which would result in air bag inflation, it is recommended that all mainte-
nance and repair be performed by an authorized NISSAN/INFINITI dealer. E
• Improper repair, including incorrect removal and installation of the SRS, can lead to personal injury
caused by unintentional activation of the system. For removal of Spiral Cable and Air Bag Module,
see the SR section.
F
• Do not use electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS unless instructed to in this
Service Manual. SRS wiring harnesses can be identified by yellow and/or orange harnesses or har-
ness connectors.

PRECAUTIONS WHEN USING POWER TOOLS (AIR OR ELECTRIC) AND HAMMERS
WARNING:
• When working near the Air Bag Diagnosis Sensor Unit or other Air Bag System sensors with the H
Ignition ON or engine running, DO NOT use air or electric power tools or strike near the sensor(s)
with a hammer. Heavy vibration could activate the sensor(s) and deploy the air bag(s), possibly
causing serious injury.
• When using air or electric power tools or hammers, always switch the Ignition OFF, disconnect the I
battery or batteries, and wait at least three minutes before performing any service.

J
CAUTION:
Check the following item when performing the trouble diagnosis.
• Check any possible causes by interviewing the symptom and it′s condition from the customer if any K
malfunction, such as EPS warning lamp is turned ON, occurs.
• Check if air pressure and size of tires are proper, the specified part is used for the steering wheel,
and control unit is genuine part.
L
• Check if the connection of steering column assembly and steering gear assembly is proper (there is
not looseness of mounting bolts, damage of rods, boots or sealants, and leakage of grease, etc).
• Check if the wheel alignment is adjusted properly.
• Check if there is any damage or modification to suspension or body resulting in increased weight or M
altered ground clearance.
• Check if installation conditions of each link and suspension are proper.
• Check if the battery voltage is proper.
N
• Check connection conditions of each connector are proper.
• Before connecting or disconnecting the EPS control unit har-
ness connector, turn ignition switch “OFF” and disconnect
battery ground cable. Because battery voltage is applied to O
EPS control unit even if ignition switch is turned “OFF”.

CAN (Controller Area Network) is a serial communication line for real time application. It is an on-vehicle mul-
tiplex communication line with high data communication speed and excellent error detection ability. Many elec-
tronic control units are equipped onto a vehicle, and each control unit shares information and links with other
control units during operation (not independent). In CAN communication, control units are connected with 2
communication lines (CAN-H line, CAN-L line) allowing a high rate of information transmission with less wiring.
Each control unit communicate data but selectively reads required data only.

STC
When DTC C1606 indicates an EPS motor malfunction, the confirmation procedure involves performing a self-diagnostic check for the EPS system using CONSULT . If the malfunction is confirmed, this implies a possible issue with the EPS motor or its connection, necessitating replacement of the faulty parts. Possible faults include malfunctioning of the motor driver within the EPS control unit or a defect in the EPS motor itself . Further inspection of the harness or connector might also be required .
To diagnose potential intermittent malfunctions in the EPS control unit, processes such as in-depth checks of all related harnesses and connectors for loose or damaged wiring can be useful . Additionally, recreating the driving conditions that might prompt the malfunction, along with repetitive testing over time intervals, can reveal inconsistencies. Utilizing tools like CONSULT for comprehensive data capture can also help assess fluctuations in control unit behavior . Addressing these issues promptly ensures safety and reliability by preemptively identifying emerging problems before they become critical .
Preconditioning is essential before conducting the DTC confirmation procedure to ensure the system is in a reset state and any stored faults do not interfere with diagnostics. It involves turning the ignition switch off and waiting for at least 10 seconds before performing further tests . This step is critical for valid detection of current malfunctions during the diagnostic process .
To confirm an issue related to the EPS torque sensor as indicated by DTC C1604, the technician should perform a self-diagnosis with CONSULT by clearing diagnostic results, turning the ignition off and then on, and then checking for DTC C1604 . If DTC C1604 is detected, it confirms a malfunction, and the torque sensor should be replaced by changing the steering column assembly . Potential causes include issues with the harness, connector, torque sensor, or EPS control unit .
To diagnose a C1609 Vehicle Speed Signal error, the procedure involves performing a self-diagnostic test for the EPS and checking for the presence of DTC C1609 . If detected, the EPS control unit may be at fault, and the steering column assembly might require replacement . Additionally, checks should be made for harness or connector issues in the CAN communication line . Further, any ABS actuator and electric unit failures that might contribute to this issue must be addressed .
If the EPS warning lamp stays illuminated, it indicates a persistent issue that needs urgent attention. Initial actions include performing a self-diagnostic check to identify any DTCs and rectifying associated malfunctions based on the diagnostic outcome . This aligns with vehicular safety by ensuring that the EPS system, crucial for maintaining control and stability, is functioning correctly with no unresolved faults that might lead to compromised steering performance or unexpected failures .
Checking terminals and harness connectors is a fundamental part of EPS diagnostics, particularly for malfunctions such as DTC C1608, which suggests internal issues in the EPS control unit . Damaged or loose connections can lead to erroneous signals or complete loss of communication between components, affecting system reliability. Ensuring all connections are secure can resolve minor issues without needing major replacements, thus correcting the fault and clearing the DTC from the system .
To diagnose a malfunctioning EPS control unit due to DTC C1602, begin by conducting a self-diagnosis with CONSULT: turn the ignition off and then on, perform 'EPS' self-diagnosis, and check if DTC C1602 is detected . If detected, the power steering motor may be malfunctioning, necessitating replacement of the power steering oil pump assembly . The potential causes for DTC C1602 include unfinished configuration of the power steering control module or issues with the harness or connector .
The logical processes outlined in EPS diagnostics, such as structured self-diagnoses and step-by-step confirmation procedures, reflect contemporary diagnostic theories emphasizing systematic troubleshooting and error isolation . They adhere to logical fault-finding principles to minimize system downtime and enhance accuracy. This methodology aligns with Industry 4.0 trends by incorporating real-time data processing, potentially influencing future vehicular diagnostics through the adoption of AI-driven analytics for predictive maintenance and automated troubleshooting, thus enhancing efficiency and cost-effectiveness in vehicle management .
Performing a self-diagnosis for EPS, accompanied by erasing prior diagnostic results, is crucial to avoid confusion between old and new error codes, ensuring that DTC detection reflects the system's current state . This process aids in isolating present malfunctions and prevents historical data from misleading current diagnostics. It also helps technicians identify consistent or intermittent issues promptly .
