INTRODUCTION
Background of the study

Tardiness has been a serious matter especially to the students. This study about
tardiness focused on finding out what causes the students to come late which affects
their attentiveness to academic performances and to know how to avoid this kind of
problem. One of the most important things a student can do to achieve academic
success is also oneof the most basic: going to school every day and being on time
(Kleber, 2013.

Chronic tardiness is when students are consistently late to class and can have
dramatic results on as tudent’s future education and career (Bennion, 2018). Lateness
can be defined as the“situation where an individual arrives after the proper, scheduled
or usual time (Nakpodia and Dafiaghor 2011).

It is tantamount to “tardiness” which is defined to be being slow to act or respond

(Oxford Advance Learners’ Dictionary, 5th ed... 1995). Tardiness is recorded as part of a
student’s permanent attendance record (Bangor Christian Schools,2016).

According to Caldarella, P., et. al (2011), Principals and teachers consider student
tardiness to be a serious problem. Some have argued that tardiness is a wide spread
problem with serious effects, particularly for younger students who must depend on their
parents to get them to school on time. Students who are frequently tardy may
missimportant opening announcements or academic activities. Teachers can become
frustratedas late students disrupt instruction, often requiring reteaching of what they
have [Link] behavior can also negatively affect the overall classroom
environment.

Always looked at decreasing tardiness in primary school-aged students using

teacher-written praise notes. Arriving late to school can also mean that students miss
outon activities designed to build connections with their peers, potentially impacting their
social interactions and creating a greater sense of alienation from their classmates.
There searchers found that students who are frequently late to school often miss out on
important opening announcements and academic activities. (Vukovic, 2017).

Students who are repeatedly tardy may need more support. Teachers should
consider that building respect for time in all students is a life skill that can be taught in
any subject area, (Kelly, 2018).

Schools have rules on tardiness or absences. Students are human, and teenagers
can be a trial as much to their teachers as to their parents. Many students may be rude,
absent, late. But there are also students who want to listen, who are punctual, who are
always present. These students genuinely want to learn, and teachers owe it to them to
keep the difficult ones in line. But up to now students are still unaware of what will be
the consequence to their academic performance, in this study researchers will aim on
finding an answer to the different causes and how to avoid being tardy. Try various ways
of dealing with erring students by knowing what makes them tick. If the teacher feel they
can take it, call attention to their behavior without embarrassing or humiliating them,
(Lee-Chua, 2012).

Tardiness has already become a habit of some students nowadays, being tardy
means coming late on school even their house is just beside their school and it can lead
to more serious problems affecting their academic learning as well as in their
performances, if a student is not on time every day the student's cannot perform well in
class discussions, when passing their output after deadline is also an example of being
tardy. Dealing with students who are constantly tardy becomes frustrating for many
teachers. Students who show up late disrupt a teacher's lecture and slow the class
down. Teachers should not handle tardiness lightly and properly discipline students who
continuously come to class late, (Lamson, 2012).

Tardiness is a serious matter but has not immediate consequences, so that the
student leads to achieve poor performances in academics. In this study, will aim on
finding an answer to the different causes of tardiness and how to avoid being tardy.

According to the Merriam Webster dictionary (2018), tardiness is the act or quality of
being late. It is one of the most common problems that our educational system is facing
right now. Though sometimes we cannot prevent ourselves from being late because of
the traffic, the distance of our house to our school or we woke up very late. We have to
remember that chronic tardiness eventually lead to a much bigger problem like school
dropout or low grade. Constant tardiness can lead to an overall negative establishment
of bad punctuality habits among students specially that attendance is one of the ways of
showing they can keep up with their obligations.
Statement of the Problems
Generally, the main focus of the study is to determine the Reason os Tardiness
Among Technical Vocational -Livelihood of Grade 11 Students in Carigara National High
School.
Specifically, this study sight to answer the following questions:
1. What are the common reasons of TVL students tardiness?
2. What could be the solutions to solve this problem?
3. How does the student's part-time job or other responsibilities contribute to
their tardiness?

Significance of the Study

The result and findings of this study about the Reason of Tardiness Among Technical
Vocational -Livelihood (TVL) of Grade 11 in Carigara National High School is significant
for several reason.
To the Students. Be aware of the effect of being tardy especially in school so that
the next time that they will do I, they will think twice because they have an idea now on
what will happen to them if they continue being tardy in school.
To the Teacher. Be aware on those students who are always coming late or not on
time in school and they can advise their students on what are they to be aware on those
students who are always coming late or not on time in school and they can advise their
students on what are they going to do to avoid being tardy in school.
To the Future Researcher. So that they will have some references or ideas in the
near future if they will be going to take research with the same topic.

Scope and Delimitations

The study will aim to determine the student's profile that includes age, gender, and
track/course distance of their home from the school and how long they are traveling
from their house to school.
The researcher will conduct survey used by means of answering questions; this
study involves population of Grade 11 Technical Vocational -Livelihood (TVL) students
of Senior High School in Carigara National High School during the second semester of
the school year 2023-2024.

Teachers often use methods such as written praise notes and reminders to improve punctuality, which have shown some success in addressing tardiness . However, handling tardiness requires understanding the underlying causes specific to each student, and methods should be adapted accordingly to avoid embarrassment and instead foster student engagement . Discipline and encouragement in proper balances are key factors in managing tardiness effectively .

Regular attendance is crucial for fulfilling academic obligations. Students who attend school consistently are better able to keep up with assignments, participate in discussions, and understand academic material. Tardiness disrupts this continuity, leading to missed instructions and potentially lower academic performance . Ultimately, attendance is foundational to academic success because it correlates with the ability to manage obligations effectively .

The primary causes of tardiness among students include factors like distance from school, reliance on parents for transportation, and other responsibilities like part-time jobs . Tardiness impacts academic performance by causing students to miss important opening announcements and academic activities, leading to frustration among teachers and potential disruption of class environments . Chronic tardiness can lower academic performance and potentially contribute to higher dropout rates .

Chronic tardiness can have significant long-term impacts on a student's educational trajectory, including lower academic achievement, increased risk of dropouts, and development of poor punctuality habits that may persist into their professional lives . These impacts can limit educational and career opportunities, contributing to a cycle of underachievement .

Part-time jobs and other responsibilities contribute to student tardiness by demanding time that might conflict with school schedules, causing students to arrive late if not adequately managed . Schools can address these issues by coordinating with students to understand their schedules, possibly offering flexible learning options, and providing guidance on time management skills to balance different responsibilities .

Schools can reduce student tardiness by implementing strategies like fostering school-wide commitment to punctuality, offering incentives for timely attendance, and engaging parents in encouraging punctual habits. Additionally, personalized interventions for chronically tardy students and exploring flexible scheduling could also help accommodate individual circumstances . Schools must identify and address specific causes of tardiness within their student population, such as transportation issues or outside responsibilities .

Understanding the specific causes of tardiness, such as transportation issues, family responsibilities, or lack of engagement in school, is essential for formulating effective interventions tailored to individual needs . This understanding allows educators to address root causes directly, customize support strategies, and implement targeted programs that reflect the diverse challenges faced by students . Tailored interventions are more likely to result in meaningful changes in student behavior and improved punctuality.

Chronic tardiness can negatively affect a student's social interactions by causing them to miss activities designed to build connections with peers, potentially leading to a sense of alienation from classmates . This lack of connection can hinder their ability to form meaningful relationships and may further impact their overall school experience.

Healthy teacher-student relationships are crucial in managing and preventing tardiness as they foster a supportive environment where students feel motivated to attend school on time. Teachers who understand individual student challenges can offer personalized interventions without embarrassment, enhancing attendance and punctuality . Effective communication and mutual respect encourage students to make better efforts to meet time expectations .

Developing a respect for time can benefit students academically by enhancing their punctuality, which is directly linked to improved academic performance due to consistent participation and engagement in classes . It also instills discipline and reliability, key traits that are valuable in future career endeavors, fostering professional success and career development .
