POINT LINE PLANE

yuning zhou

A point locates a position in space or on the canvas. A line is

made up of a chain of points which establishes the connection
between two points. A plane is a flat surface with considerable
height and width. I chose this example of Point, line and plane
because it uses space effeciently , to show off each pricinple
clearly. This example also uses the space to layout each princi-
ple, so that each principle can be clearly identified. This print
was designed for packaging on a soap bottle, so the the sections,
where there is dead space, it has been used so that the design can
be spread across the packaging.
Point,Line,Plane

This is primary research, that I conduct around the principles

Point, line and plane. This peice, is part of a series that I creat-
ed using chalk, charcoal and black paper. I have used the chalk
and the charcoal pencil, to create a peice of work made up from
points, lines and planes. I created this as an experiment, using
materials that creally commonly used together. The use of the
lines and points were, inspired by aboriginal art. This outcome
uses similar materials that they used and uses similiar feautres
like the lines and points.
Point,Line,Plane

This is Development of the primary research. for this, I decided

to use the progams Photoshop and illustrator. I used these soft-
wares to create a collection of digital experiments of the chalk
peices I did for my primary research. I used an image of my
chalk version and used illustrator yo digitise it. I did this, so that
I would have a digital and hand drawn collection of images. I
also decided to do a digital experiment of this image, so that I
could experiment with the thickness of the lines and the planes.
this digital experiment also allowed me to focus on the lines,
without the texture and blur of the chalk.
Rhythm and balance

Unity, Balance, Rhythm, Proportion

- Abstracts by Jessie Chen
Visual balance occurs when the weight of one or more things is
distributed evenly or proportionately in space. I chose this exam-
ple because it uses these principles but in an abstract form. I also
like the way colour and shape has been used in this example.
The use of shape, makes this image abstract due to the way they
are layered and placed around the frame. the use of colour also
adds to the abstract aesthetic because they are bright but they all
contrast with each other. The yellow and the orange compliment
each other but the the brown and the pink contrast due to them
being at the oposite tones. The darkness of the brown creates
depth and the brightness of the pink contrasts with it.
Rhythm and balance

This is primary research, that I conduct around the principles

Rhythm and balance . This peice, is part of a series that I creat-
ed using chalk, charcoal and black paper. Here, I have used the
chalk and blended it with charcoal to create the smuged lines
and texture that is present. I used the textures and the shapes to
create an abstract composition that is balanced on both sides.
I tried to create similar shapes on both sides of the line but the
objects on the right side are more simple than the shapes on the
left side. I did this to try and create symmetry but also keep the
abstract aesthetic that I was trying to create.
Rhythm and balance

This is Development of the primary research. for this, I decided

to use the progams Photoshop and illustrator. I used these soft-
wares to create a collection of digital experiments of the chalk
peices I did for my primary research. In this image I have used
the pen tool in illustrator to created the defined shapes. However
I also used the paint brush tool in illustrator to create the rough
textured effect that the chalk created on the black paper. I think
that the brush that I used doesn’t really create the same textures
but it does create a similiar effect and aesthetic that was created
in my primary research.
Scale

Everything, Everyone, Everywhere.

José Bártolo
In art and design, the principle of scale refers to the relative
size of one object compared to another, typically the size of the
artwork to the viewer’s body. Scale can also refer to the size
relationships of different visuals within a singular piece of art.
I chose this example of scale because I really liked the way the
large text has been surrounded by the smaller body of text. This
also creates Typographic Hierarchy because Bartolo has used a
mixture of different sizes and weights of text to create these lay-
ers. I also like the letters that are made from the face drawings. I
think that this also makes the larger text interesting rather than it
just being all of the same colour.
Scale

This is primary research, that I conduct around the principle

Scale. This peice, is part of a series that I created using chalk,
charcoal and black paper. In this peice, I have created layers of
shapes and textures that are all in different sizes, to create differ-
ent scales through out the peice. I also used text to create scale.
The use of text and drawings, was inspired by the example I
found. I liked the way that the drawings and the text were com-
bined because it created an abstract aeasthetic but it didn’t make
the work hard to understand.
Scale

This is Development of the primary research. for this, I decided

to use the progams Photoshop and illustrator. I used these soft-
wares to create a collection of digital experiments of the chalk
peices I did for my primary research. For this experiment, I used
photoshop to create the textured section. I used the paint brush
tool in photoshop because the similiar brushes in illustrator
didn’t have the same aesthetic. For the rest of the objects, I used
the pen tool in Illustrator to create the text and the other shapes.
I have used lines to create the objects that are orange and I have
created filled shapes for the white and grey shapes. I have done
this to create variation in size, to experiment with scale.
Texture

WHEN WINTER MEETS SUMMER – Nor-

way
Jan Erik Waider
In graphic design, texture is generally only a visual thing, but
it creates a physical illusion, and it continues to play a leading
role in the creation of all types of visual elements. This use of
texture and line in this image makes it abstract. This is because
this image looks like an image of the sky at night and space.
However this image was taken in Norway of ice bergs melting
in a river. The textures are rough but they also create a sparkled
effect in the image. the lines in the water lead your eyes through
the texture towards the center of the image.
Texture

This is primary research, that I conduct around the principle

Texture. This peice, is part of a series that I created using chalk,
charcoal and black paper. In this experiment, I used different
papers to create layers of texture. I used charcoal and chalk as
the main medias in this experiment. I blended the chalk and
the charcoal together to create different textures that are pres-
ent through out the image. I used the chalk sideways to create
the streaks that are present , to build up the rough tewxtures in
the image. On the white paper sections, I used the charcoal to
add texture. this rubbed into the texture of the paper, creating
a rough surface that contrasts with the smooth areas where the
charcoal and chalk is blended together.
Texture

This is Development of the primary research. for this, I decided

to use the progams Photoshop and illustrator. I used these soft-
wares to create a collection of digital experiments of the chalk
peices I did for my primary research. For this experiment, I used
Illustrator. I used the paint brush tool and the pen tool to create
this experiment. I used the paint brush tool to create the texture
that is featured in this experiment. I used a charcoal brush to
create the effect of chalk on the black paper, however the brush
didn’t quite create the effect I wanted to create bu I think that it
has worked. I used the pen tool to create the main shapes in this
image, then I used the brush tool to add the texture on top of
these shapes to create a similar aesthetic to my primary version.
Colour

The sun and the moon

Ekaterina Savic

The typical colour wheel includes the blue, red, and yellow
primary colours. The corresponding secondary colours are then
green, orange, and violet or purple. I chose this example because
I like the use of line, texture and colour. This image is a Digital
illustration. I like the way the colours in this image have been
blended to create different gradiants. I think the blending of the
clouds into the purple character is unique because it doesn’t cov-
er part of the character, it creates a transparent layer that looks
like she is hiding behind the clouds.
Colour

This is primary research, that I conduct around the principle

Colour. This peice, is part of a series that I created using chalk,
charcoal and black paper. In this experiment I used paint makers
to create different coloured objects. I incorperated the colours
with the textures of the chalk and charcoal to create an experi-
ment that followed the same approach as the other experiments.
By incorperating the colours to the darker tones of the chalk and
charcoal, I have created contrast between the different tones.
Colour

This is Development of the primary research. for this, I decided

to use the progams Photoshop and illustrator. I used these soft-
wares to create a collection of digital experiments of the chalk
peices I did for my primary research. I used illustrator to create
this experiment. I created the texture in this image using the
brush tool in illustrator. I used a white charcoal brush to create
the texture and I used a soft round brush to create the black lines
that follow through the textured areas. I used the pen tool to cre-
ate the coloured objects. these objects use the same colours, that
I used in my primary research.
Framing

Too Good by Haley Blais MV

Dide Su Bilgin

Visual framing is the presentation of visual elements in an image

or layout in relation to the main subject. I have chosen this ex-
ample of framing because it is a clear example. The person has
been captured walking towards the car, covering the veiw of it.
This creates different frames in the photograph. This image also
captures different angles and perspectives. this is becuase you
can look at this image from the perspective of the person, walk-
ing at an angle or look at it from a direct perspective.
Framing

This is primary research, that I conduct around the principle

Framing. This peice, is part of a series that I created using
chalk, charcoal and black paper. I have cretaed this experiment
by layering shapes ontop of each other. I have used outlines
and hole shapes, to cover the chalk squares, to create different
frames. It also creates differents perspectives when you look
at the shapes in this experiment.
Framing

This is Development of the primary research. for this, I decided

to use the progams Photoshop and illustrator. I used these soft-
wares to create a collection of digital experiments of the chalk
peices I did for my primary research. I created this experiment
using illustrator. I used the pen tool to create this experiment.
the colours, are the same colours that I used in my primary re-
search. I used layers to create this experiment due to the use of
different lines and shapes that were used. In my final version of
this peice, I will experiment eith framing to create abstract out-
comes.
Hierarchy

Hierarchy of Typography I Type Book

Tawni Miyashita

Hierarchy is a visual design principle which designers use to

show the importance of each page/screen’s contents by ma-
nipulating these characteristics: Size – Users notice larger
elements more easily. Colour – Bright colours typically attract
more attention than muted ones. I chose this example because
Miyashita has layered the letters on top of each other and has
experimented with the size of each letter. This creates an ab-
stract veiw point of the word that has been created. the letters
also look like they have been made from paper and folded in
the style of origami.
Hierarchy

This is primary research, that I conduct around the principle

Hierarchy. This peice, is part of a series that I created using
chalk, charcoal and black paper. This experiment was inspired
by the example that Miyashita created. I have used different
sized letters and layered them ontop of each other to create the
scentence in an abstract veiwpoint. I have also used a varia-
tion of colours, to create contrast on each of the layers.
Hierarchy

This is Development of the primary research. for this, I decided

to use the progams Photoshop and illustrator. I used these soft-
wares to create a collection of digital experiments of the chalk
peices I did for my primary research. I created this experiment
using illustrator. I used line and shape to create this experiment.
This experiment is made up of layers. This is because the shapes
have been layered to create many letters at one, that spells out
the title of a Joy Division song “Love Will Tear Us Apart”.
Layers

My Paper Dino
Marta Lesha

Layers are simultaneous, overlapping components of an image

or sequence. The concept of layers comes from the physical
world, and it has a long history in the traditions of mapping
and musical notation. I chose this example because it clearly
shows how Lesha has layered each peice of card. Each shape
in this image is made up from small layers of card that have
been built up to create these shapes. I also like the colours that
have been chosen because i think that they compliment each
other.
Layers

This is primary research, that I conduct around the princi-

ple Layers . This peice, is part of a series that I created using
chalk, charcoal and black paper. This experiment, I used wa-
tercolour paper, black paper, chalk and charcoal. I ripped up
peices of the water colour paper and glued it down to create
layers. I then drew onto the paper and used the chalk to create
texture. I used charcoal to create texture on the water colour
paper. The drawings, spread across each layer of the paper. I
created this as an abstract outcome for this principle.
Layers

This is Development of the primary research. for this, I decided

to use the progams Photoshop and illustrator. I used these soft-
wares to create a collection of digital experiments of the chalk
peices I did for my primary research. I used illustrator to create
this experiment. I used the paint brush tool and the pen tool to
create this. I used the paintbrush tool to create the texture that is
present in this image. I used opacity on the white shapes, so that
the texture would become slightly darker and looks stronger. I
used the pen tool to create the main object, which uses line to
snake through the image. The object is transparent, so that the
texture can be seen through it.
Transparency

Isotype 3
Mario De Meyer

Transparency creates a sense of depth in design. Instead of

keeping design elements (like typography, photos, and shapes)
separate, you can layer them. This adds depth and makes for a
more visually interesting design. I chose this example because
I like the way that the text has been layered. I also like the use
of opacity to create this 3d transparent text. I also like the use
of shape in this image because each letter is made up from a
few shapes that are transparent. the angle that the letters are,
create the three dimensional perspective.
Transparency

This is primary research, that I conduct around the principle

Transparency. This peice, is part of a series that I created us-
ing chalk, charcoal and black paper. In this experiment, I used
charcoal and chalk to create this three dimensional text. I used
shading to create the transparent pannels that are present.
Transparency

This is Development of the primary research. for this, I decided

to use the progams Photoshop and illustrator. I used these soft-
wares to create a collection of digital experiments of the chalk
peices I did for my primary research. This experiment was creat-
ed in Illustrator. I used the pen tool to create these letters. I have
used lines to create the three dimensional letters and the opacity
tool to create the transparent effect.
Modularity

Modularity II
Joey Camacho

Modular design, or modularity in design, is a design principle

that subdivides a system into smaller parts called modules,
which can be independently created, modified, replaced, or
exchanged with other modules or between different systems.
I chose this example of modularity because it clearly divides
each shape into smaller modules. I like this example because
of the use of colour and transparency. I like the use of colour
because it makes it bolder and the gold grid stands out ontop
of the shapes. I also like the use of shadow in this image.
Modularity

This is primary research, that I conduct around the principle

Modularity. This peice, is part of a series that I created using
chalk, charcoal and black paper. I have created this image,
with inspiration from Camacho’s work. This image is also a
square grid split up into modules. However I have tried to split
the sections up into shapes that aren’t just squares, ti make it
feel more original. I have also created a triangular version to
create a variation of this experiment
Modularity

This is Development of the primary research. for this, I decided

to use the progams Photoshop and illustrator. I used these soft-
wares to create a collection of digital experiments of the chalk
peices I did for my primary research. For this experiment, I used
Illustrator. I used the pen tool to create these shapes. I used the
lines to create each section inside of the main objects. I have
also used colour and opacity to create sections inside of the larg-
er square.
Grid

The Fundamental Guide To Impossible Shells

Max Mollison

In design, a grid is a system for organizing layout. The layouts

could be for print (like a book, magazine, or poster), or for
screen (like a webpage, app, or other user interface). I chose
this example because I like the use of the grid and the colours.
I likes how the grid was used to create these shells, as they are
complex shapes, using a grid to draw them would be difficult.
I also like the use of the bright and vivid colours. These col-
ours draw you in due to them being bright.
Grid

This is primary research, that I conduct around the principle

Grid. This peice, is part of a series that I created using chalk,
charcoal and black paper. I created this experiment by drawing
a grid using charcoal. I did this, so that I could use the grid to
drew the main object. I drew this abstract object by using the
chalk and making lines over the grid. I used the chalk so that
I could create lines that would be curved, similar to the lines
present on the shells from the example I was inspired by.
Grid

This is Development of the primary research. for this, I decided

to use the progams Photoshop and illustrator. I used these soft-
wares to create a collection of digital experiments of the chalk
peices I did for my primary research. I have used illustrator to
create this digital experiment. I first created a grid using the pen
tool. I did this, to scale the object I drew. I then drew the ob-
ject that I created onto the grid. I have used opacity to make the
object transparent. I have done this so that the grid I used can be
seen. In my final version of this peice, I am going to the use the
grid more effectively. I am also going to use points from my oth-
er peices to create this final version. I will also be experimenting
with text in my final version.
Pattern

Mural / Next Floor

Perrine Honoré

Patterns are simply a repetition of more than one design element

working in concert with each other. A seamless pattern is one
where every element within a design (no matter how often it’s
repeated) combines to form a whole. I chose this example be-
cause I like the use of lines and shapes that are present. The use
of line in this image, is the main principle that is mainly used in
this pattern. The lines make up all of these abstract shapes and
it creates different section in the image. The colours that have
been used, all compliment each other and they have been used to
seperate each section in the pattern.
Pattern

This is primary research, that I conduct around the principle

Pattern. This peice, is part of a series that I created using chalk,
charcoal and black paper. In this experiment, I used lines, points
and planes to create an abstract pattern. This experiment has an
aboriginal art aestethic, similar to the outcome I created for the
point, line and plane principle. I have also use the chalk to create
shapes that flow into the curved lines I have used.
Pattern

This is Development of the primary research. for this, I decided

to use the progams Photoshop and illustrator. I used these soft-
wares to create a collection of digital experiments of the chalk
peices I did for my primary research. I have used Illustrator to
create this digital experiment. I used the pen tool to create the
point, lines and planes that are present in this pattern. I also used
the pen tool to create the main objects and shapes. The brush
tool was used to create a chalk textured effect in the chapes
towards the outside of the image. However the texture is more
blurry than rough. I did this to create a variation in the image
due to the common use of the rough texture throughout my ex-
periments.
Diagram

Graduation Project
[Link] Architecture

A diagram is a graphic representation of a structure, situation,

or process. Diagrams can depict the anatomy of a creature,
the hierarchy of a corporation, or the flow of ideas. Diagrams
allow us to see relationships that would not come forward in a
straight list of numbers or a verbal description. I chose this ex-
ample because I wanted to chose a diagram that was technical
but also has minimalist detailing. This diagram is a technical
drawing relating to architecture. I like this image because of
the use of lines and how detailed it is.
Diagram

This is primary research, that I conduct around the principle

Diagram. This peice, is part of a series that I created using chalk,
charcoal and black paper. I have created this as a diagram, that
was inspired by the technical drawings I researched. However,
this is a more simplistic example of a diagram due to it not being
highly detailed. I used charcoal to create the main lines of the
diagram. I also ussed chalk, to created textured pannels on the
diagram.
Diagram

This is Development of the primary research. for this, I decided

to use the progams Photoshop and illustrator. I used these soft-
wares to create a collection of digital experiments of the chalk
peices I did for my primary research. I used Illustrator to create
a digital version of this simple diagram. I used the pen tool to
create this diagram due to it being a simple line diagram. I used
the lines to create this three dimensional diagram. the lines all
connect together an I have used negative space in the pannels
to make it look hollow. In my final version of this peice, I am
going to use a similar aesthetic to my pattern peice. I am going
to do this, to create a diagram that uses point, line and plane to
create an abstract three dimensional diagram.
Time and motion

Traditional Arts
Micah Payaban

Time and motion are considerations for all design work, from a
multipage printed book, whose pages follow each other in time, to
animations for film and television, which have literal duration. I
chose this example of time and motion because it is a hand drawn
image that uses paint to create movement. The movement in this
image has been created by blending different shades of brown to-
gether to creat the areas that would get hit by the light.
Time and motion

This is primary research, that I conduct around the principles

Time and Motion . This peice, is part of a series that I created
using chalk, charcoal and black paper. For this experiment, I
tried to create my own version of the example I found from my
research. I used chalk to create thew mug and charcoal to create
the splashing drink. However the origninal image exicutes the
motion part better, due to the media that Payaban used compared
to the charcoal I used.
Time and motion

This is Development of the primary research. for this, I decided

to use the progams Photoshop and illustrator. I used these soft-
wares to create a collection of digital experiments of the chalk
peices I did for my primary research. I used Illustrator to create
this experiment. I drew the cup using the pen tool and I used the
opacity tool to make slightly transparent. I tried to create motion
using the pen tool and layers. I have remade this peice and have
used lines to create motion in the image. I have used similiar
lines to what I used in my other peices to create the motion.
Figure/ground

Figure Ground
mykola rybka

Figure-ground refers to the shapes, space or forms within a

composition. In simplest terms the figure is what you notice
and the ground is everything else. The ground, sometimes
referred to as the ‘negative’ space or the background, is the
surrounding area that the figure is placed upon. I chose this
image because I like the way they created a sequence and how
they have layered each letter in the small frame. I also like
how Rybka uses the space in each frame, keeping dead space
between each line.
Figure/ground

This is primary research, that I conduct around the principles

Figure and Ground. This peice, is part of a series that I created
using chalk, charcoal and black paper. I created my own version
of the work I researched. I was inspired to create my own ver-
sion using chalk, instead of using digital softwares. However I
think that I could improve this work by making the lines thicker
in certain areas. I would do this, to fill some more of the dead
space that I left.
Figure/ground

This is Development of the primary research. for this, I decided

to use the progams Photoshop and illustrator. I used these soft-
wares to create a collection of digital experiments of the chalk
peices I did for my primary research. I have used Illustrator to
create this digital experiment. I have used the pen tool to create
all of the line and shape that is present in this image. I used this
box, to contain the shapes that are present. I used the lines to
connect the shapes together yo make it look layered inside the
box.
