For thousands of years, people have worked using mainly the strength of their own muscles.
But the
capabilities of human muscles are limited.
Already in ancient times, there was a need to have devices that would provide an opportunity to gain
strength. In other words, devices, the use of which makes it possible to lift loads that cannot even be
moved without such devices.
Devices designed to increase force or change its direction are called mechanisms.
With the help of such mechanisms, people built pyramids, temples, etc. Simple mechanisms are nothing
more than tools.
It is much easier to move loads by putting them on wheels, to pierce stone blocks or wooden logs, using
a wedge - a triangular piece of wood or metal. Even today, heavy objects, such as stones, boxes, even
cars, can be lifted by a person with the help of a long wooden or metal rod or board that has a fulcrum,
a lever. The well, whose popular name is "crane", works on the principle of a lever. However, the lever
has a drawback - with the help of this simple mechanism, loads cannot be lifted to a significant height.
