Assignment
Chemistry-Class XI

Light is the form of radiation known from early days and speculation about its nature dates to remote
ancient times. In earlier days (Newton) light was supposed to be made of particles (corpuscles). It was
only in the 19th century when wave nature of light was established. It is now well established that there
are many types of electromagnetic radiations which differ from one another in wavelength (or
frequency). These constitute what is called electromagnetic spectrum. Different regions of the spectrum
are identified by different names. Some examples are: radio frequency region around 10 6 Hz, used for
broadcasting; microwave region around 1010 Hz used for radar; infrared region around 10 13 Hz used for
heating; ultraviolet region around 1016 Hz a component of sun's radiation. The small portion around 10 15
Hz, is what is ordinarily called visible light.

1) Find energy of each of the photons which

(i) correspond to light of frequency 3 x 1015 Hz.
(ii) have wavelength of 0.50 A.

[Link] the wavelength of an electron moving with velocity of 2.05 x 10 7 ms-1

[Link] Vividh Bharati station of all india Radio, Delhi, broadcasts on a frequency of 1,368kHz (kilo hertz).
Calculate the wavelength of the electromagnetic radiation emitted by transmitter.

[Link] velocity associated with a proton moving in a potential difference of 1000 V is 4.37×10ms-1 If the
hockey ball of mass 0.1 kg is moving with this velocity, calculate the wavelength associated with this
velocity.

b) Calculate the number of molecules in 16 g of methane.
C) Determine the empirical formula of an oxide of iron which has 69.9% iron and 30.1% oxygen by mass

6.a)Write the electronic configuration of Na+ Cr3+, Mn2+

b) An atomic orbital has n equal to 3. What are the possible values of l,and m?

7.a)List all the quantum numbers of the electrons for 4f orbital

B) which of the following orbitals are possible 1p, 2s, 2p, 3f? Explain

[Link] many subshells are associated with n equal to 4.

10.a) Nitrogen has positive electron gain enthalpy whereas oxygen has negative. However oxygen has
lower ionisation enthalpy than nitrogen. Explain
b) Arrange, boron, aluminium, carbon and silicon in the increasing order of their oxides.
11.a)Would you expect the second electron gain enthalpy of oxygen as positive, more negative or less
negative than the 1st one . justify your answer.
B) Predict the period, groups and blocks to which each of the following elements belong—, calcium,
chromium, copper, silicon
