SUBJECT : PHYSICS

Module-3 Optics

1. What is Huygens’s Principle of wave propagation? Discuss all important points.

2. State the Principle of Superposition and write down the name of phenomena produced.
3. What is meant by interference of light? Drive the derivation for condition of constructive and
destructive interference. Find the width of fringes in Young’s experiment.
4. Discuss the formation of colours in thin films and show that with the monochromatic light the
interference patterns of reflected and transmitted light are complementary.
5. Give the theory of Newton’s rings and describe a method of producing them. Explain how this
phenomenon can be used to determine the radius of curvature and refractive index of medium.
6. Describe the construction and working of Michelson’s interferometer in short. How will you
adjust the interferometer to get (i) localized fringes (ii) White light localized fringes (iii)circular
fringes. Write down application of it.
7. What are the difference between interference and diffraction?
8. What are the difference between Fresnel and Fraunhofer class diffraction?
9. Discuss the formation of primary maxima and secondary maxima, with the plan transmission
diffraction grating.
10. What do you mean by Rayleigh’s criterion of resolution? Define the limit of resolution and
resolving power.
11. Explain the resolving power of a grating. Deduce an expression for the same.
12. In a two- slit experiment with monochromatic light. Fringes are obtained on a screen placed at
same distance from the slits. If the screen is moved by 5x10-2 m towards the slits, the change in
fringe width is 3x10-2 m . If the distance between the slits is 10-3 m. Calculate the wavelength of
light used. (𝑨𝒏𝒔𝝀= 600nm)
13. In a Newton’s rings experiment, the diameter of 15th ring was found to be 59x10-4 m and that of
the 5th ring was 33.6x10-4 m. If the radius of curvature of Plano- convex lens used is 1m.
Calculate the wavelength of the source of light.(𝑨𝒏𝒔𝝀= 588nm)
14. For Michelson’s interferometer calculate the distance between the two successive positions of
the movable mirror giving well defined fringes in the case of sodium source of wave lengths of
589.0nm and 589.6nm.( 𝑨𝒏𝒔𝒙= 2.89x10-4m)
