Tutorial-VI (Modern Physics: Compton Scattering, Hydrogen Spectra

& Related Problems)

1. In the Compton scattering, the photon of energy E0 = hν0 and momentum P0 =

hν0 /c is scattered from a free electron of rest mass m0 . Show that:
(a) The scattered photon will have energy E = E0 /[1 + α(1 − cos φ)], here α =
hν0 /m0 c2 and φ is the angle through which the photon is scattered.
(b) The kinetic energy acquired by the electron is K = αE0 (1 − cos φ)/[1 + α(1 −
cos φ)].
(c) cot(φ/2) = (1 + α) tan θ where θ is the recoil angle of the electron.

2. X-rays are Compton scattered at an angle of 60o . If the wavelength of the scattered
radiation is 0.312 Å find the wavelength of the incident radiation.

3. A photon is Compton scattered off a stationary electron through an angle of 45o

and its final energy is half its initial energy. Calculate the value of the initial energy
in MeV.

4. A 30 keV X-ray photon strikes the electron initially at rest and the photon is scat-
tered through an angle of 30o , what is the recoil velocity of electron?

5. A 0.3 MeV X-ray photon makes a “head-on” collision with an electron initially at
rest. Using conservation of energy and momentum, find the recoil velocity of the
electron.

6. What is the longest wavelength present in the Paschen series of spectral lines?

7. Find wavelength of the spectral line that corresponds to a transition in hydrogen

from n = 6 state to the n = 3 state.

8. What is the shortest wavelength present in the Brackett series of spectral lines?

9. Electrons of 12.2 eV are bombarded at hydrogen atoms in a gas discharge tube. De-
termine the wavelengths of the spectral lines that can be emitted by the hydrogen.
