Paper Engineering Structures | Assignment 2

90 Unit Football
1) Write about this geometric shape describing it to a 6-year-old child.
2) How did it feel being part of this group project? Would you like to make the same
model by yourself? Why or why not?
3) What would you keep in mind if this was an individual project? What would you do
differently?
4) Take 1 creative photograph of the model and print it in black and white, too.

1. The geometric shape of a football is a truncated icosahedron or spherical polyhedron

which is like a sphere that is made up of hexagons and pentagons. Each Hexagon was
surrounded by pentagons on all sides. Keeping this technique in mind, it was easier to
figure out the placement of each piece and maintain it’s symmetry.
2. I Loved doing a group project as we could make equal number of pieces and make a
bigger project compared to us making individual smaller ones. We all tried to figure
out the placement of each piece together, made mistakes, and helped each other
rectify them. If we were making it individually for the first time, it might have been
more frustrating doing it on our own, but as a group project, it felt less frustrating and
a lot more simpler knowing that we were all working on it together. I would still like
to make it ourselves so we would have a mini version to keep with us and have the
satisfaction of making it ourselves. We would also have a better understanding of
making it and can improve and rectify our mistakes the second time.
3. If we were to make it individually, I would keep the precision and proper folding of
the pieces in mind, ensuring I have sharp creases and fix the pieces accurately so that
the structure comes out to be a proper sphere that is stable and visually appealing.
Paper Lamps
1) Construct 3 different designs/patterns of a collapsible paper lamp using the Kirigami
techniques that you learned in class this week.
2) Write a note on the process you used, the design decisions you made, and the reasons
behind them. (200 words)
3) Install them in the lab and take 2 pictures of each (work-in-progress and upon
completion)
Prototype

I made the lamps using the Kirigami technique. I started by planning my designs on a folded
A3 sheet with a pencil. Depending on the design of my lamps, I made the appropriate marks
of the designs with a pencil and made straight lines from the outline of the shape to the fold
of the paper. I then cut the lines with a paper cutter and then unfolded the sheet. I pushed the
cut lines on the inside making a pop-up design. While designing, I thought of the design I
envisioned and how I wanted my paper lamp to be. I made small prototypes for each design
to see how they would turn out and make any changes or rectify any errors. I made all three
lamps with the same technique of cutting and made them using straight lines to give that pop-
up and 3D effect. I decided to make my lamps in a symmetric manner using straight lines
instead of curved non-symmetric designs as I wanted them to have a geometric look that was
aesthetically pleasing. I aimed to make lamps that had a simpler process but looked equally
appealing and had ample space cut out for the light to shine through.
