Subtraction is the process of taking away a number from another number.

Example:

How many guavas do we have in all? 5


How many were crossed out? 2
How many were not crossed out? 3

The subtraction sentence for the illustration is:


5 - 2 = 3 difference

minuend subtrahend

The symbol (-) is read as minus.


Minuend- is the number from which we subtract
Subtrahend – is the number that we subtract
Difference – is the answer in subtraction

To subtract 2-to-3-digit numbers without regrouping;


a. Subtract the ones digit first, then
b. subtract the tens digit, and
c. bring down the hundreds digit
Example:
897 897 897
- 23 - 23 - 23
4 74 874

Subtract the following.


1. 20 2. 789 3. 96
- 10 - 1 6 - 5 3_
