RELATED LITERATURE

Recent researches emphasizes the potential of YouTube tutorials as effective educational

tool for students facing challenges in learning, particularly in mathematics. YouTube video
lessons were significantly supported Grade 7 students in modular distance learning by providing
clear and simplified explanations for complex mathematical topics, improving their
comprehension (Insorio, A. O., & Macandog, D. M., 2022). Similarly, non-mathematics majors
also experienced skill improvements through teacher-produced YouTube content, highlighting
the platform’s adaptability to various learner needs, making it beneficial for students
encountering academic difficulties (Nabayra, J. N., 2022)

Additional studies have explored the use of phenomenon-based learning videos, finding
that repeated access to these resources boost students’ confidence and problem-solving abilities
(Cano, J. C., & Lomibao, L. S., 2023). Students using these videos showed gains in self-efficacy
and skills, emphasizing that flexible access to explanatory content deepened their understanding
of challenging material (Cano, J. C., & Lomibao, L. S., 2023). In STEM subjects, YouTube
tutorials effectively break down complex tasks into simpler steps, promoting a sense of
accomplishment and mastery, which is especially beneficial in subjects often associated with
academic stress (Mecida, S., et al., 2023).

The role of YouTube in promoting learning engagement has also been well-documented.
Maziriri et al. (2020) used the Technology Acceptance Model to assess student perceptions of
YouTube as a learning tool, finding that students rated the platform highly for its accessibility
and engaging content format. This positive perception supported their choice to use YouTube as a
supplemental learning tool, particularly in overcoming academic challenges (Maziriri, E. T., et
al., 2020). Likewise, a study observed that YouTube provided elementary school teachers with an
effective medium for delivering interactive online lessons, which facilitated independent learning
by providing content that students could easily navigate at their own pace (Rahmatika, M. Y., &
Leo, A., 2021).
In the Philippines, a study documented that during the pandemic, YouTube served as an
essential platform in Philippine education, supporting instructional delivery when traditional
classroom interaction was limited (Dagohoy, D., 2023). This shift allowed both teachers and
students to maintain academic continuity and access complex subject matter outside of the
regular classroom setting. At Mindanao State University Buug Campus found that STEM
students frequently used YouTube tutorials to aid their mathematics learning, with a positive
correlation between YouTube usage and improved proficiency in the subject (Hadji Jamil, H. A.
et. al., 2022).

HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY

This study aims to explore how YouTube tutorials can serve as a potential tool in
enhancing the learning experience of senior high school students struggling with mathematics.
The researcher hypothesize that:
H1: Students who engage with YouTube tutorials for mathematics will demonstrate
significantly higher levels of mathematical comprehension and problem-solving skills compared
to students who do not utilize these resources.

H2: Students with learned helplessness in mathematics will show greater improvements
in self-efficacy and academic performance when provided with access to YouTube tutorial
videos, compared to those without access to such resources.

By examining the effectiveness of YouTube lessons, this study will give evidence for how
such tools might improve student motivation, interest, and academic achievement, particularly in
mathematics.
