-:CURTAINS:-
• It is a piece of cloth intended to block or obscure light, or drafts, or
water in the case of a shower curtain, also known as a drapery .
• Curtains are a form of window treatment, and complete the overall
appearance of the house., fire resistance, and life span.
• Curtains vary according to cleanability, ultraviolet light deterioration,
oil and dust retention, noise absorption
• Curtain may be moved by hand, with cords, by press-button pads or
remote-control.
• Measuring the curtain size needed for each window varies greatly
according to the type of curtain needed, window size, and type and
weight of curtain.
PURPOSE OF CURTAINS:-
• Using curtains on windows to cover window, to give good aesthetical
appearance & to block any incoming sunlight.
• Thus curtains allow an individual to regulate the amount of sun that
comes in through the transparent window.
• They can be also used as a divider, or partition, between rooms within
a residential setting.
• Nowadays we are using shower curtains to avoid spreading of water.
• In some instances a curtain may be used in musical and theater
productions cover up the entire stage in between acts. These types of
curtains are bigger than "regular" curtains.
MARERIAL FOR CURTAINS:
• Cotton, vinyl and polyester, silk, satin etc. are used for curtains
depending upon requirements.
• Curtains come in a variety of shapes, materials, sizes, colors and
patterns .
• Curtains can be made from varying thicknesses of fabric, each with a
differing degree of light absorption and heat insulating qualities. For
maximum temperature control, the curtain gap to the window should
be small,
SELECTION OF CLOTH:-
• Think about the impression you want the room to convey, then choose
a fabric for your window treatment
1
• For Formal Settings, consider sheer or net curtain is one that is made
from translucent fabric, such as a loosely woven polyester or a cotton
lace. Sheer curtains allow a majority of light to be transmitted through
the fabric. These types of curtains offer very little in the way of heat
insulation.
• Uncoated fabrics provide the next level of heat insulation and light
absorption. They are composed of a tightly woven fabric, most
typically a cotton/polyester blend, which is mostly opaque.
• r these fabrics: Brocade, Chambray, Silk, Velvet, or Velveteen.
• For Informal Settings, use these fabrics: Chintz, Cotton sateen, Linen,
Seersucker, or Sheeting.
• For a Casual Setting, select one of these fabrics: Broadcloth, Burlap,
Canvas, Denim, Monk's cloth, Muslin, Poplin, Sailcloth, etc
• Coated fabrics consist of a standard uncoated fabric with an opaque
rubber backing applied to the rear of the fabric to provide improved
light absorption. To create a coated fabric a liquefied rubber polymer
is applied in a single coat to an uncoated fabric and subsequently
fused dry by means of a heated roller. It absorb approximately 50-
70% of a direct light source. To improve the light absorption of a
fabric upto 100% 3 coats may be provided.
• Maximum light absorption and heat insulation in a curtain is created
through a lined curtain, which typically consists of an uncoated fabric
at the front to provide the look and feel of the curtain, with a separate
coated fabric attached at the rear to provide the insulative qualities.
The coated fabric is typically referred to as a lining, which simply
refers to a coated fabric that does not have any particular color or
pattern.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHILE DESIGNING A CURTAIN:-
Style- Style is a major consideration, achieved by a subtle balance
between fashion, period, personal taste, and practicalities.
• Period- the decorative style you choose and the architectural period of
the room and furnishings go hand in hand. For example frilly chintzes
are inappropriate among modern furniture.
• Rooms- What function does the room have? Is it a day or evening
room? Kitchen or bath room? Depending on the function of the room
you may need special window treatments. For example in a bathroom
3
or kitchen curtains which can be easily taken down, have no lining,
and are washable should be used.
• Light - Before starting any drapery project ask yourself how much
light will be excluded?
• Heat-Curtains play a key role in keeping a room warm or cool
according to the season. Interlined curtains retain heat and exclude
drafts.
• Privacy- Ask yourself how much privacy do you need? A bathroom
window would obviously need more privacy than a kitchen window.
• Color- Certain colors will make a room look larger or smaller
depending on their use. Warm colors (yellow, orange, red) advance or
make it look like it is moving towards you. While cool colors (blue,
violet, green) tend to recede.
• Fading-In sunny windows avoid fabrics that tend to fade or rot.
• Cleaning & Maintenance- Depending on how often you plan on
cleaning your curtains or drapes should be considered when choosing
fabric and style. For example kitchens and bathroom curtains will
need to be cleaned more frequently.
• Personal Preference-Choose a window treatment that will make you
happy. You may have to live with the treatment for many years to
come. Your preferences will last longer than the current fad.
