GRDN2200

Graphic Techniques for Illustration

Project #3

Illustrative Effects

Purpose:

In general, the purpose of the projects is to ensure that each individual student:

• achieves a sufficient mastery of skills required to develop artwork in

professional tools
• develops conceptual drawing and illustrational skills
• applies the skills described above to develop artwork that serves purposes
such as better UX design, branding and marketing in websites, and
developing images and models that can be used in gamification and
augmented reality

Skills:

Specific skills required for this project may include, but are not limited to:

• Using layers in Photoshop

• Incorporating photos in artwork
• Snipping images from photos
• Applying the use of brush effects to create a mood, or clarify a design, or
persuade a user in some way
• Using geometric line patterns, or compositions
• Filling shapes with images or colours or gradients

Format:

Can be done individually or in pairs – but each student is required to master all of
the skills required for the project.

The student is required to use PhotoShop for this project. (Other tools will be
used later in the course.) Students are encouraged to help each other to learn
the skills required in the assignments, even across teams, however each student
or team must submit work that is uniquely their own, that they have done on their
own, and must be able to replicate those tasks on the tests.

Below are videos that will help you with this. Most are quite short (and quite fun, I
think). You do not need to watch all of them but you should skim most of them at
least, as they have some useful techniques to do with things other than texture.
(Note – if you find any that contain offensive content, please alert your instructor.
Generally, they have been skimmed for content, but something could be missed
and they could change.)

For each section:

(i) Completeness – how well does it meet the technical requirements - 5 marks
(ii) Aesthetic success – 10 marks
(iii) Creativity – (level of thought and imagination?) – 5 marks

technically, b) how it influences the mood of the user or is used to persuade
the viewer in some way – 5 marks

Note: Incorporate all designs into an annotated report in Word that describes
what goals (technical, business, aesthetic, etc.) are being achieved.
Include also brief notes on technical details (brush size, opacity, things like
that).

Submit the Word doc report together with all Photoshop files to the appropriate
dropbox. It should have:

 Cover sheet
 Table of Contents
 Page numbers
 A brief introduction explaining the purpose of the assignment
 All images and annotations imported into the document
 Brief conclusions
 References where needed

Students are expected to master skills including using Photoshop layers, incorporating and snipping images, applying brush effects, using geometric patterns, and filling shapes with colors or gradients .

Brush effects are applied to create a mood, clarify a design, or persuade a user. These techniques are integral to the process of enhancing visual communication and artistic composition within the design projects .

Videos serve as resources that teach useful techniques related to graphic design, such as changing backgrounds, creating abstract wallpapers, and using brush effects. They help students acquire practical skills that are essential for their projects by providing step-by-step guidance, although not every video needs to be watched in full .

The project's format allows assignments to be done in pairs, but insists on each student's independent mastery of all required skills. This format ensures that while students may collaborate for learning purposes, accountability remains with the individual, who must replicate all required skills alone, especially during assessments .

Incorporating text into design projects can enhance visual impact by providing contextual information or messaging that complements the visual elements. It increases user engagement by making the design not only visually appealing but also informative and communicative, which helps in promoting products, services, or ideas effectively .

The primary purpose of the GRDN2200 project is to ensure that students achieve mastery of professional graphic design tools, develop conceptual drawing and illustrational skills, and apply these skills to create artwork that serves practical purposes such as UX design, branding, and marketing in websites, as well as gamification and augmented reality .

Annotations are important as they provide explanations of the technical aspects of the artwork and describe how techniques influence user mood or how they are persuasive. This ensures students can articulate the reasoning and impact behind their design choices, enhancing their critical thinking and communication skills .

The rubric evaluates projects based on completeness (5 marks), aesthetic success (10 marks), creativity (5 marks), and annotations (5 marks, which include explanations of techniques used and their effects on user perception).

The project allows for collaboration by permitting students to work in pairs, yet it ensures individual mastery by requiring each student to master all necessary skills individually. Students are encouraged to help each other learn, but each team's submission must be unique and independently replicable by the individual team members during tests .

Aesthetic success is heavily weighted in the rubric because visual appeal plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of graphic design. It contributes significantly to user experience and perception, making it essential for effective communication and persuasion in marketing, branding, and interactive design projects .
