Chapter 1

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

In 2014, approximately 20 percent of Filipinos were classified as overweight, while

around 5 percent were classified as obese (Domingo, 2016). The increase in obesity and
overweight rates among Filipinos was attributed to changes in their diet, specifically the
growing prevalence of higher-fat diets and the higher consumption of processed foods
and refined carbohydrates. These changes in eating habits coincided with the rise in fast
food consumption in both the US and the Philippines.

Interestingly, in developed nations, obesity and excessive weight cause more deaths
than underweight does [21, 22]. In 2016, 39% of individuals aged eighteen and above were
overweight, and 13% were obese [21]. This increase is attributed to society's growing
affluence and ongoing urbanization, leading to greater consumption of animal protein
and processed foods (high in fats and sugars) and reduced intake of whole grains and
other sources of fiber [23].

The purpose of this study was to evaluate how food choices affect the overall health
of employees and to explore any potential influence these factors may have on their
well-being. This is significant because good health is essential for optimal performance
and productivity in the workplace. The results of this research will contribute to existing
knowledge and will also provide employees with a better understanding of the
importance of diet and physical activity in maintaining good health. Additionally, these
findings will offer valuable insights for policymakers and the public on how healthy eating
habits can enhance overall well-being.

This research aims to provide valuable insights for teachers, school administrators,
and future researchers seeking to improve food choices in schools. By examining the key
factors impacting overall health, the study will offer suggestions for developing
successful programs. The findings of this research will play a role in enhancing the health
and wellness of school staff by implementing programs to improve their well-being.

Significance of the Study

The findings may provide information beneficial to the following individuals:

Teachers. This study may help the teachers to have a healthy life since this study will
provide information about the benefits that they can acquire on having a good food

choices.

School administrator. They could help in implementing plans in helping the

teachers to have a healthy life style and will be equipped with scientific research
thus they can treat this problem objectively.

Future Researchers. The conducted studies will further open doors to future
researchers to refine and expand studies in relation to food choices. This may
serve as a source of information about what food choices can help the general
health of teachers.

What is the General Health of the Faculty and Staff?

Is there any significant Impact of Food Choices on the General Health of Faculty and Staff of Sta. Lucia

National High school?

Hypotheses of the Study

The following assumptions were tested at .05 level of significance.

"Student's motivation does not have a significant impact on learning the second

language."

"Student's attitude does not have a significant impact on learning the second

language."

Definition of Terms

The following terms were defined as conceptually and operationally for common

understanding:

Attitude.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

Scope:

This research aims to analyze how food choices affect the overall health of faculty
members at Sta. Lucia National High School for the academic year 2024-2025. It seeks to
assess how making healthy food choices influences a healthy lifestyle. Surveys will be
conducted among the faculty to gather data, and the research will analyze their feedback
to determine the impact of having healthy food options.

Delimitation:

The research will concentrate on the dietary selections made by the staff at Sta. Lucia

National High School, encompassing teachers, administrative staff, and support

personnel, while deliberately omitting the eating habits of students and the local

community. This study will take place on the school premises, specifically analyzing the

food options provided in the canteen and by nearby vendors throughout an entire

academic year to account for seasonal changes. The prevalence of lifestyle-related

illnesses, and self-assessed health status, rather than extensive medical assessments.

The investigation will examine meal selections during school hours, as well as snacks and

beverages acquired on campus, in addition to the frequency of dining out compared to

bringing meals from home. Data collection will involve surveys and interviews,

complemented by observational techniques to evaluate the nutritional quality of the

food offered. Limitations of the study include potential biases in self-reported dietary

practices and the exclusion of food choices made during school-sponsored events,

thereby ensuring a focused analysis of how food selections specifically impact the

overall health of the staff at Sta. Lucia National High School.
