Chapter 2 Lessons 3 & 4 Questions

1) Describe three common attitudes toward the environment found in modern society.
In today's world, people have different attitudes toward the environment. Some focus on
conservationism, which means they want to protect nature and use resources wisely to
keep the planet healthy for future generations. Others follow consumerism, where they
prioritize buying things and economic growth, often ignoring the negative impact this
has on the environment. Then there are activists, who actively push for change, fighting
against issues like climate change and pollution, believing that urgent action is needed
to save the planet. Together, these attitudes influence how society thinks and acts about
environmental issues.

2) Why is environmental justice part of the ecological movement?

Environmental justice is an important part of the environmental movement because it
focuses on how different communities, especially those that are low-income or made up
of minorities, are often hurt the most by pollution and climate change. These
communities may face more health problems and lower quality of life due to
environmental issues. The ecological movement aims to protect the planet while also
ensuring that everyone has equal access to a healthy environment and a say in
decisions that affect them. By including environmental justice, the movement
emphasizes that a clean and safe environment is a right for everyone, no matter where
they live or how much money they have.

3) Which approach to the environment—development, preservation, or

conservation—do you think you adopt in your own life? Do you think it is appropriate for
everybody in the world to share the same attitude you hold?
I usually take a conservation approach to the environment in my life, which means I
focus on using resources wisely and making choices that are good for the planet. I try to
recycle, reduce waste, and save energy, like using public transport instead of driving.
However, I don’t think everyone should have the same attitude. Different places and
cultures face their challenges, so some might need to focus on development for
economic growth, while others may prioritize preserving nature. It’s important to find a
balance that respects local needs while still working toward a healthier environment for
everyone.
