Guidelines for Project Courses
(MTH496-499;MTH598,MTH599,MTH697-700)
1. The course numbers MTH496-499 are DE courses offered only for UG batches from 2022 onwards.
Course numbers MTH391-394 are available only for UG batches from 2021 and earlier. The current
UGP guidelines do not apply to Y21 and earlier BS batches.
It may be noted that students from the department may choose to do UGP’s in other departments as
an OE. The current guidelines do not apply to such UGP’s.
2. An MS student has to complete 4 MS projects under course numbers MTH697-700. However, each
student can have at most 3 supervisors to complete the 36 credit project requirement.
3. The Project Committee Convenor is responsible for all the actions to be performed through OARS/pingala
for all the project courses.
4. A student who wishes to register for a project course should necessarily submit the duly filled-in project
registration form (as given in Annexure-I) to the project convenor before pre-registration/registration.
The project convenor may accept the course registration request subject to fulfillment of the desired
parameters.
5. External supervision: A project may have atmost two project supervisors with atleast one from the
Department of Mathematics & Statistics.
• All the supervisors should be actively involved in the project work and the topic of the project
should be related to mathematical sciences.
• External supervisor(s), if any, should necessarily take part in the evaluation/grading process and
a declaration to this effect is included in the form (given in Annexure-I).
6. Joint projects may be allowed, in exceptional cases, with a maximum of two students in one project
course. Separate registration requests have to made by each student and the acceptance of the same
will be made by the project convenor based on the recommendation of the supervisor(s). Note that
evaluation of such projects will be done separately for each student.
7. Students who wish to register for multiple project courses under the same supervisor are required to
submit a separate form with a different title for each such project.
8. For each registered project, the student should make a presentation and submit a report.
• In case of joint projects, each student will have to submit separate reports and make separate
presentations.
• For multiple projects under the same supervisor, each registered project should have a separate
presentation and project report, for the purpose of evaluation.
9. A faculty member of the department can supervise (in a given semester) at most five project courses. A
declaration to this effect should be given by the supervisor in the form given in Annexure-I. A student
registered under one supervisor for multiple project courses and/or same title will be counted as many
times.
10. For evaluation of their project, students are required to submit to the convenor a project report (both
hardcopy and electronic copy) about two weeks before start of the end-semester exams. The precise
date and time for the submission deadline will be circulated by the project convenor.
11. The project oral presentations will be conducted during the last weekend before the end-semester
exams. The precise schedule, slot and venue will be circulated by the project convenor.

12. The evaluation of project courses will be done by a committee of faculty members. The project evalu-
ation committee will be constituted by the project convenor comprising of project course supervisors.
Any faculty member may also be made part of the project evaluation committee at the discretion of
the project convenor.
13. The grade of a student will be awarded by the evaluation committee in consultation with his/her
project supervisor(s). The project may be evaluated based on the following components: progress
report, presentation, viva. The evaluation given by the project supervisor should contribute to 50%
weightage of the final grade given by the evaluation committee.
14. Project progress reports should normally not exceed 40 pages of A4 size with double spacing. The
project report should be arranged as follows:
(a) a declaration from the student(s) undertaking the project in the format of “Declaration Form”,
as given in Annexure-II, to avoid plagiarism concerns;
(b) Abstract;
(c) Table of contents;
(d) Main Text;
(e) List of reference.
It is recommended to arrange the main text as an introduction, the main body and conclusions.
